Baxter claims first dual win in program history

NORTH ENGLISH — Baxter’s wrestling team celebrated the first dual win in program history during a quadrangular on Jan. 3.

The Bolts got their historic win over Collins-Maxwell with a 30-24 win.

Baxter lost its other two duals on the night, falling 52-12 to host English Valleys and 48-15 to Belle Plaine.

In the win over Collins-Maxwell, the Bolts took five forfeits. There were no contested matches in the dual.

Baxter got forfeit wins from seniors Ben Huff (182) and Austin Good (145), sophomores Micah Kearns (220) and Brad Matthews (152) and freshman Grant Borts (138).

Good was 3-0 on the night and is now 9-4 on the season.

Good took two forfeits and won 15-10 against Belle Plaine. Huff, Kearns and Borts were 2-1 on the night.

Huff and Kearns both took forfeits against Belle Plaine. Borts pinned his English Valey opponent and Good took a forfeit as the only wins in that dual.

Bolts compete at North Mahaska tournament

NEW SHARON — Baxter’s wrestling team took five grapplers to the North Mahaska Invitational on Jan. 5, and the Bolts scored 26 points on the day

The Bolts placed seventh in the seven-team field. Montezuma was sixth with 48 points.

The Grinnell JV won the meet with 80.5 points, which was 0.5 points better than second place Des Moines Lincoln’s JV.

There weren’t a lot of wrestlers in most of the weight classes.

Two Bolts entered in the 138-pound class.

Borts placed fourth and was 2-3 on the day, while freshman Austin Roush finished fifth with a 1-4 mark. Borts defeated Roush by fall in their head-to-head match.

At 145 pounds, Good was third with a 1-2 record. Kearns was third at 220 but was 0-2 on the day. Huff placed fourth at 182 but was 0-3 in his three matches.

Baxter wrestled in a triangular against Colfax-Mingo and Collins-Maxwell on Jan. 8.

The Bolts take on North Mahaska at 6 p.m. on Jan. 10 in New Sharon.
