NHS bowling teams split with Urbandale

Cardinal Lanes was rocking on Saturday in the first semester’s final Newton High Cardinal bowling dual.

The Cardinal squads welcomed the challenge of competing against the tough Urbandale J-Hawks. Urbandale came into the dual undefeated.

Newton’s girls kept their dual record perfect as the handed the J-Hawk girls their first loss, 2,255-2,044.

The J-Hawk boys were able to build a 192-pin lead over the Cardinal boys and claimed a 2,600-2,481 win.

Despite trailing by almost 200 pins, the Newton boys had a strong run in the Baker Games. They rolled up a 918-pin count but Urbandale countered with 845 pins.

Newton put together Baker Games scores of 163, 170, 184, 192 and finished off with a 209.

Junior Alex Frymoyer paced the Newton boys with a 322 series on game of 164 and 158.

Juniors Carter VanderSchel and Nate Keith posted a 315 (169-146) and a 312 (127-185), respectively.

Seniors Devon Young and Cutter Benac each had a 307 with Young rolling games of 179 and 128 and Benac having games of 156 and 151. Junior Eli Ingle had a 282 (167-115).

The Cardinal girls staked out a 1,513-1,370 lead after the individual competition. They didn’t let up as the had a 742-pin count to Urbandale’s 674 in the Baker Games with scores of 157, 153, 143, 161 and 128.

Sophomore Abby Price bowled a 329 to lead the girls with games of 150 and 179. Keely Birkenholtz, a senior, had a 325 (170-155) and senior Taylor Johnson added a 322 (189-133).

Sophomore Jenna Miller had a 275 (116-159) and senior Alicia Miller had a 262 (141-121). Sophomore Tanya Hernandez had a 257 (128-129).

The Newton girls’ varsity is 4-0 in dual action and the boys are 2-2. Newton gets rolling again on Jan. 5, 2019, hosting Pella Christian.

Against Urbandale on Saturday, there were four junior varsity duals on the lanes.

The Newton boys’ JV No. 1 rallied with a 765-686 score in the Baker Games to post a 2,017-1999 win. They trailed 1,313-1,252 after the individual games.

Newton won the girls’ JV No. 1 dual 1,8833-1,380 and the girls’ No. 2 JV dual 1,101-916. Urbandale took the boys’ JV No. 2 match 2,058-1,494.

Newton JV boys No. 2 scores: Jacob Warren 251, Levin Jenkins 237, Blake Romberg 231, Alex Allspach 217, Dallas King 196; Baker Games scores: 124, 112, 105, 134, 83.
