Cardinal varsity wrestlers compete in WSR duals

WAVERLY — Junior Destin Schroder and sophomore Anthony Bestell came away from Saturday’s Waverly-Shell Rock’s Go-Hawk Title Town Duals undefeated. The two Newton High wrestlers went 5-0 with each winning four contested matches and getting a victory by forfeit at 182 and 106, respectively.

Newton’s Cardinals went 2-3 in the duals. In pool duals, the Cardinals lost to Staley, Mo., 47-33 then beat Urbandale 43-33. They dropped a 54-26 decision to Kaukana, Wisc., and lost to Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 48-24.

The Cardinals faced Burlington in the seventh-place dual. Newton claimed a 52-24 victory.

Host Waverley-Shell Rock, which is ranked No. 2 in 3A, won the duals followed by Kaukana and 3A No. 8 Bettendorf.

Staley finished fourth and Cedar Rapids Kennedy, which is ranked No. 10 in 3A, was fifth. Iowa City High was sixth followed by Newton and Burlington. Urbandale finished ninth and Clear Creek-Amana was 10th.

“Overall our team competed and fought well, and showed a lot of improvement over the last week. I am excited to see where they go from there,” Newton head coach Andy Swedenhjelm said.

Schroder had one of the big matches of the day for the Cardinals in Newton’s fourth dual of the day. Schroder upended 3A fourth-ranked Cael Knox of Cedar Rapids Kennedy on a 5-3 decision.

Junior Gage Linahon, who is ranked No. 5 at 220 pounds in 3A, pinned third-ranked Tanner Teem of Urbandale. Linahon, went 4-1 on the day. Swedenhjelm said Linahon lost to No. 9 Cam Jones of CR Kennedy when he got caught in a throw.

Sophomore Gabe Abrams was 3-0 for Newton at 285. At 113 pounds, freshman Brennan Amos was 4-1. Newton senior Jaise Gulling, who is ranked No. 10 in 3A at 195, was 2-3 on the day losing to ranked wrestlers out of Missouri and Wisconsin and lost 4-1 to No. 5 Cade Parker of CR Kennedy.

Newton hosts back-to-back Little Hawkeye Conference duals this week. Pella is at Newton on Tuesday and Norwalk is at Newton on Thursday. Both duals start with junior varsity matches at 6:30 p.m.
