Short-handed PCM opens season with six wins

NEVADA — PCM’s wrestling team is ailing.

The Mustangs expect to be in the mix for a state championship at the end of the season.

Currently, PCM just hopes to get to a point where it has a full lineup to put out on the mats.

The Mustangs competed in a quadrangular on Dec. 6 and walked away with two Heart of Iowa Conference wins.

They also suffered their first dual loss of the year, falling to Carlisle.

PCM went 4-3 in contested matches against Nevada and defeated the host Cubs 54-30.

The Mustangs were 7-4 in contested matches during a 39-27 win over North Polk.

In the match against Carlisle, the Mustangs gave up 18 points in forfeits and lost the contested matches 6-5 during a 51-27 loss.

PCM is still missing No. 1 ranked Lucas Roland at 182 pounds and ninth-ranked Landon Fenton at 113.

The Mustangs (6-5) also gave up forfeit points at 106, 120 and 126 against Carlisle, 106 and 120 against Nevada and 120 against North Polk.

Five wrestlers were 3-0 on the night.

Top-ranked senior Wes Cummings (160) won all three of his matches at 170 pounds. He had two wins by fall and one by forfeit.

Fourth-ranked senior Jarron Trausch (170) moved up to 182 for the night and was 3-0 with three pins.

Also winning all three of his matches by fall was junior Jace Smith at heavyweight.

Third-ranked Colby Tool (145) and sixth-ranked Payton Drake (126) also were 3-0.

Tool, a sophomore, stayed at 145 and won by fall against Nevada but moved up to 152 in the other two duals.

He defeated North Polk’s Logan Engebretson 7-6 and pinned Carlisle’s Lucas Olson.

Drake, a junior, moved up to 132 for his matches against Nevada and Carlisle. He took a forfeit against the Cubs and defeated Carlisle’s Peter Comer 6-2.

Drake wrestled at 138 against North Polk took a 3-1 decision over Nicholas Bockenstedt.

Senior Cody Wallace and junior Seth Greiner were both 2-1. Wallace took a forfeit and won a 5-1 decision, while Greiner recorded a pair of pins.

Freshman Kaleb Ives and senior Fabio Sammet both took forfeit wins against Nevada. Sophomore Cooper Sloan took a forfeit against North Polk.

PCM sweeps

quadrangular at Sigourney

SIGOURNEY — Six wrestlers went 3-0, two others were 2-0 and the top-ranked PCM opened its dual season with three wins during a non-conference quadrangular on Dec. 3.

The Mustangs defeated Bondurant-Farrar 46-33, downed host Sigourney-Keota 65-12 and blasted Pleasantville 62-18.

PCM went 6-3 in contested matches against Bondurant-Farrar.

The Mustangs took two forfeits but also forfeited the final three weights at 106, 113 and 120 to make the dual closer than it could have been.

Sigourney-Keota forfeited five weights to PCM.

The Mustangs went 6-1 in contested matches with five pins and one technical fall.

Against Pleasantville, PCM went 9-2 in contested matches.

Seven wins came by fall.

Trausch, Wallace, Greiner, Drake, Tool and sophomore Brian Nicholson all went 3-0 on the night.

Cummings and freshman Grant Uitermarkt both went 2-0.

Top-ranked Cummings won one match by fall and the other by technical fall. Wallace recorded three pins and sixth-ranked Drake and Nicholson both won twice by fall and once by forfeit.

Greiner played basketball for most of his life before trying wrestling this season. He won twice by fall and once by major decision.

Third-ranked Tool took a forfeit, won by fall and won by technical fall at 145 on the season.

Trausch won once by fall, once by forfeit and once by an 8-5 decision. The decision came against Class 1A No. 9 Cael Lester of Pleasantville. Trausch is ranked fourth in 2A.

Senior Chance Palm and Smith both were 2-1 on the day with one win by fall and one win by forfeit.

Mustangs defeat Oskaloosa at Ankeny Centennial

ANKENY — Tool won all five of his matches and four others claimed four wins on the day, but PCM won only one dual on the day at the Ankeny Centennial Dual Tournament on Dec. 8.

The Mustangs ended their day with a 48-30 win over Oskaloosa. Before that, PCM lost 50-19 to host Ankeny Centennial, 47-34 to Dallas Center-Grimes, 51-23 to Carlisle and 42-34 to Ballard.

Tool, who is ranked third in Class 2A at 145 pounds, won two of his matches by pin, two more by 4-0 decisions and started his day with an 11-2 major decision against the Jaguars.

Tool is now 13-1 on the season.

Cummings lost for the first time this season in his fourth match of the day. He was 4-1 on the day with three pins and a 12-1 win by major decision.

Top-ranked Cummings suffered a 12-5 loss to second-ranked Skyler Noftsger of Ballard. Cummings is 12-1 this season.

Drake went 4-1 at 126, Wallace was 4-1 at 152 and Trausch finished 4-1 at 170.

Drake’s only loss of the day came to 2A No. 4 Carter Logue of Carlisle. Drake, who is ranked sixth, lost 8-3. He did have two pins, a win by an 8-3 decision and a 9-0 major decision.

Drake improved to 12-2 on the season.

Wallace was 4-1 in the tournament and is now 12-3 on the season. He had two pins, a forfeit and a 10-1 major decision win.

The loss came against 3A No. 10 Eric Owens of Centennial. Wallace led 10-1 before losing 12-10.

Fourth-ranked Trausch (13-2) claimed three wins by pin and another by a 14-6 major decision. The only loss came to 3A No. 2 Logan Neils of Centennial. Trausch, whose only two losses this year have been to Neils, lost 8-5 on Saturday.

Smith was 3-2 on the day with three pins. Greiner won two matches, one by forfeit and one by fall.

Sophomore Cooper Sloan and freshmen Trey Thomas and Kaleb Ives were all 1-4, sophomore Kinser Sloan was 1-3 and senior Clay Van Wyk and Uitermarkt finished 0-5 and 0-3, respectively.

The Mustangs had four wins against Centennial. Cummings and Greiner both won by pin, Tool claimed an 11-2 major decision and Drake scored an 8-3 win over Noah Blubaugh, who is ranked eighth in 3A at 120 pounds.

PCM won six matches against DCG. Tool, Wallace, Trausch, Smith and Cummings all won by fall and Drake won 9-0.

The Mustangs won five matches against Carlisle. Trausch and Smith both pinned their opponents, Cummings won 12-1, Wallace scored a 10-1 win and Tool won 4-0.

PCM trailed Ballard 27-6 before closing the gap in the final matches. Both teams had five pins in the dual, but the Bombers were 7-6 in contested matches. PCM lost by eight and forfeited 106.

Wins for PCM against Ballard came from Drake, Tool, Wallace, Cooper Sloan and Smith by pin and Trausch by a 14-6 major decision.

The Mustangs were 7-4 in contested matches against Oskaloosa. PCM had four pins, took three forfeits and forfeited 106 to the Indians.

Drake, Cummings, Trausch and Kinser Sloan all won by fall, Greiner, Wallace and Thomas each took forfeits and Tool and Ives both won by decisions of 4-0 and 7-1, respectively.
