Cardinal bowling splits with Bobcats

Opening a new bowling season on the new synthetic lane surface at Cardinal Lanes, Newton High’s Cardinals took a split in a dual meet with visiting Marshalltown on Monday.

Newton’s varsity girls faced a nine-pin deficit after the individual games against Marshalltown. It came down to the combined Baker Games to decide a close match between the Cardinals and the Bobcats.

The Cardinals posted a 738-pin count in the Baker Games to the Bobcats’ 659 score. Newton claimed a 2,202-2,132 win against Marshalltown.

“The girls did an amazing job keeping head-to-head with the Marshalltown’s girls,” Newton head bowling coach Christie Hughes said. “I couldn’t be more pleased with their win this year.”

The Cardinal boys lost 2,913-2,765 to the 2018 Class 3A state runner-up Marshalltown boys, who had three returning bowlers off that team back on the lanes. The Bobcats led by 115 pins going into the Baker Games.

“I am impressed with how well our boys’ varsity team bowled today coming within 148 pins of an extremely dominant team,” Hughes said. “Compared to last year’s loss of 899 pins this is a major improvement.”

Sophomore Tanya Hernandez led the Cardinal girls with a 309 on games of 168 and 141. Senior Keely Birkenholtz rolled a 305 (147-158) and sophomore Abby Price had the high game score of 179 then added a 121 for a 300.

Senior Alicia Miller finished with a 276 (134-142) and junior Ashley Loehr had a 274 (136-138). Jenna Miller, a sophomore, had a 270 (128-142).

The Newton girls trailed Marshalltown, 1,473-1,464. Newton had Baker Games scores of 131, 172, 166, 136 and 133 to claim the win.

Newton junior Carter VanderSchel bowled the highest series score of 447 on games of 222 and 225. Marshalltown senior Kamrin Chizek had a 425 to lead the Bobcats. Newton senior Cutter Benac posted a 391 (220-171) matching Marshalltown senior Raymond Wiegand’s 390. The Bobcats had a 385 by junior Lucas Kramer, who finished second at the state tournament last year.

The Cardinal boys got a 350 out of junior Nate Keith on games of 193 and 157. Senior Devon Young ended up with a 347 (199-148) and junior Eli Ingle had a 280 (175-105). Junior Alex Frymoyer had a 272 (121-151).

Marshalltown led Newton’s boys 1,930-1,815 after the individual games. Newton put together a 950 pin count for Baker Games to the Bobcats’ 983. Newton’s Baker Games scores were 187,179, 184, 134 and 226.

“Our goal going into this match was to beat our pin fall from last year’s meet against Marshalltown. Both teams were able to accomplish this goal,” Hughes said.

Newton hosts the NHS Cardinal Invitational tournament at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Cardinal Lanes. The Cardinals have Isaac Newton Christian Academy, Knoxville, Mason City, Oskaloosa and Waukee coming to compete.

“We would love to see a packed house for the Cardinal Invitational on Saturday,” Hughes said.

Newton’s junior varsity girls beat Marshalltown 1,680-1,334. Senior Chloe Butler and sophomore Danny Lewis each had a 263 to lead the Cardinals. Junior Gabby Pickerell had a 222 followed by sophomores Deborah Durant and Sydni Followill at 215 and 205. Junior Jillian Waits had a 195.

The NHS junior varsity girls’ Baker Games scores were: 105, 86, 76, 125, 120.
