Newton Police Department
• Timothy L. Ballard, 33, of Newton, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and driving with a suspended license and eluding police at 9:12 p.m. Saturday. According to Newton police, an officer spotted Ballard driving a gold Buick Rendezvous while searching for him in the 400 block of East 17th Street South. After the officer identified the driver as Ballard, police pursued the Buick and turned its sirens on. The Buick eventually made its way into the Hy-Vee parking lot and then drove northbound beyond a stop light at the intersection of First Avenue East and East 14th Street. Police terminated the pursuit at the time. Officers later caught up to Ballard and arrested him, and found a glass pipe with residue in his pants pocket. He was transferred to Jasper County Jail.
Jasper County Sheriff’s Office
• Joshua A. Brown, 28, of Monroe, was charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence at 6:42 a.m. Sunday. According to the sheriff’s office, a witness called 911 after witnessing a white 2001 Chevrolet Suburban, allegedly belonging to Brown, crash into a flag pole in the 7700 block of Highway 6 East. Deputies found the flagpole damaged, as well as the front passenger side of the vehicle and the front passenger side door open. Deputes later located Brown at a Casey’s store in Newton after a friend gave him a ride there. Brown, with watery and bloodshot eyes, admitted to consuming alcoholic beverages. Brown was transported to Jasper County Jail for sobriety tests. He received a citation to appear in court.
• Ryan C. Hackathorn, 38, of Newton, was charged with three counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance, operating a vehicle while under the influence and possession of a knife at 9 p.m. Thursday. According to the sheriff’s office, Hackathorn was called in as a suspicious vehicle. Hackathorn admitted to arriving 10 minutes before deputies arrived, but with bloodshot eyes, dilated pupils and thick-tongued speech. Deputies found a glass and rubber pipes with residue on each, an electronic cigarette with residue and seven white pills, all found within Hackathorn’s vehicle. He was arrested and transported to Jasper County Jail.
• David D. Springer, 57, of Colfax, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident at 9:56 p.m. Sept. 28. According to the sheriff’s office, Springer allegedly collided into a light pole on a gravel road at 9380 S. 76th Ave. W. in Prairie City. Springer was not present at the scene by the time deputies arrived. Later on, deputies caught up with Springer, who explained the large amount of blood in the vehicle was due to the collision, which he fled from because he was intoxicated. He was arrested and transported to Jasper County Jail.
• Christopher M. Retman, 43, of Colfax, was charged with tampering with a witness at 3:40 p.m. Oct. 1. According to the sheriff’s office, Retman was observed allegedly driving a white Ford truck and throwing a lit cylinderical object in the 1200 block of Highway 17 North, where the property of a witness currently involved in a case resides. The witness saw smoke coming from the cylinder afterward, and ran out of the business out of fear of losing the business associated with that building. Retina was seen on security footage throwing the cylinder from his truck. He was subsequently arrested and transported to Jasper County Jail.
