Tigerhawk boys win team title at BGM

BROOKLYN — Not even a smaller-than-usual lineup held back the Colfax-Mingo boys’ cross country team on Monday.

The Tigerhawks had only five runners at the BGM Invitational, but it was enough to win their first team title of the season.

Colfax-Mingo placed four runners in the top 20 and edged South Iowa Cedar League rival Belle Plaine by three points. The Tigerhawks scored 78 points at the top of the SICL-heavy field.

Belle Plaine had 81 points in second, Sigourney was third with 100 and North Mahaska was fifth in the five-team field with 137 points. GMG finished with 113 points.

The Tigerhawk boys were led by junior Hunter Greene, who finished in sixth place with a time of 20 minutes, 32.88 seconds. Senior Cauy Fitch was eighth in 20:56.40.

On the girls’ side, Colfax-Mingo was third in the four-team field with 90 points. Belle Plaine won the team title with 51 points. GMG was next with 79 points and Sigourney placed fourth with 129.

Junior Abbey McConeghey and senior Ilia Hostetter once again led the Tigerhawk girls. McConeghey was ninth in 25:45.9 and Hostetter was 10th in 26:10.24.

The Tigerhawk boys did not have the services of junior Cyden Fitch or sophomore Avery Lees, but it didn’t matter in the team standings. Freshman Coleman Craig placed 18th with a time of 23:12.06 and sophomore A.J. Green ended up 20th in 23:37.20.

The final counting runner was junior Noah Strohmeyer, and he finished 26th with a time of 24:53.54.

The third Tigerhawk girl to finish was senior Payton Rhone, who was 21st with a time of 29:03.88. Senior Delaney Underwood finished 23rd in 29:16.14 and the final counting runner was sophomore Daytin Chadwick, who was 27th in 30:02.17.

Sophomore Crystal Lincoln and senior Jordan Atwood were the other two varsity runners in 30th and 34th, respectively.

North Mahaska’s Cheyenne Shaw won the girls’ race in 22:25.13. GMG’s Jackson Edens won the boys’ race in 18:41.59.

The Tigerhawks compete at 4:15 p.m. on Sept. 25 in Knoxville.
