Tigerhawk volleyball ends losing skid at ACGC tournament

GUTHRIE CENTER — The Colfax-Mingo volleyball team got back into the win column on Sept. 15 during its opening match of the ACGC tournament.

The Tigerhawks snapped a five-match skid with a sweep of Exira-EHK. Colfax-Mingo also suffered losses to Audubon, West Central Valley and Glidden-Ralston.

Colfax-Mingo defeated Exira-EHK 21-17, 21-14. Glidden-Ralston swept the Tigerhawks 25-14, 25-15, but the other two losses went to three sets.

Audubon defeated Colfax-Mingo 23-25, 21-9, 15-9 and West Central Valley edged the Tigerhawks 21-12, 18-21, 16-14.

Against Exira/EHK (1-15), senior Braedynn Rawlins and freshman Morgan Van Dyke both had six kills, and senior Colbee Cunningham and sophomore Chelsey Temple each had four kills.

Cunningham added seven digs, freshman Kyra Lester delivered 16 assists and served up five aces and Van Dyke had a pair of aces.

Lester was 14-of-14 in serves and senior Chelsea Russell was 7-of-7.

Rawlins led Colfax-Mingo (2-11) with four kills in the loss to Audubon (6-11). Lester had eight assists, five digs and was 7-for-7 in serves with an ace, Russell had seven digs and Cunningham, senior Shaylee Shedenhelm and sophomore Kira Warrick all added six digs. Shedenhelm was 9-for-9 in serves with an ace.

Cunningham had six kills and six digs to lead the Tigerhawks against West Central Valley (4-7). Lester finished with 14 assists, nine digs and three aces, Rawlins added five kills and Van Dyke collected four kills and was 10-for-10 in serves. Russell and Shedenhelm finished with eight digs and seven digs, respectively.

Against Glidden-Ralston (6-5), Cunningham had five kills and 10 digs, Lester dished out 10 assists and Van Dyke finished with four kills and four digs. Shedenhelm tallied five digs.

Colfax-Mingo hosted North Mahaska on Sept. 17. The Tigerhawks play Lynnville-Sully at 7 p.m. on Sept. 24 in Sully.

BGM 3, Colfax-Mingo 0

BROOKLYN — Colfax-Mingo couldn’t end a losing streak on Sept. 13 when it traveled east to face conference rival BGM.

The Tigerhawks were looking for their first South Iowa Cedar League win, but the Bears won the match 25-11, 25-21, 25-20 at home.

Colfax-Mingo dropped to 0-3 in SICL play. BGM is now 1-11 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Cunningham led the Tigerhawks with five kills, 12 digs and three aces. Lester added six assists, seven digs and two aces. Lester was 11-for-11 in serves.

Rawlins chipped in three kills, Russell added eight digs and was 6-for-6 in serves and Shedenhelm collected seven digs.

Warrick was 10-for-11 in serves with three aces. The Tigerhawks had 11 aces in the loss.

BGM senior Kaylee Lint had a match-high nine kills. Senior Rylie Gritsch added 13 digs and nine aces. She was 23-for-24 in serves. The Bears had 17 aces in the win.

Montezuma 3,

Colfax-Mingo 0

COLFAX — Colfax-Mingo hosted the SICL’s best team on Sept. 10, and the Class 1A No. 8 Montezuma Bravettes left town with a three-set victory.

Montezuma swept the Tigerhawks 25-7, 25-13, 25-11.

Leading the Tigerhawks were Cunningham and Rawlins, who each had three kills. Freshman Avery Rague added two kills.

Lester finished with a team-high seven assists, five digs and three aces. She was 9-of-10 in serves. The Tigerhawks were 29-of-32 in serves.

Shedenhelm collected a team-high six digs, while Cunningham, junior Abby Dille and Warrick all had three digs.
