NCMP, NHS football scrimmages are next week

Two high school intrasquad scrimmages are set for Newton next week.

The Newton/Colfax-Mingo/Pella Aquagirls will have their intrasquad meet at 6 p.m. Thursday at Newton’s Maytag Pool. The event is free and open to the public. Bring a lawn chair and watch the NCMP Aquagirls swim and dive.

NCMP also has the Race an Aquagirl event at the end of the meet where anyone can get in the pool and race for $5. All proceeds go to Camp Sunnyside for children with disabilities in Des Moines. The Aquagirls go to Camp Sunnyside to help kids swim and grow more comfortable in water.

Next Friday will be the annual Newton High’s Under Armour Protect This House Kickoff for the 2018-19 year at H.A. Lynn Stadium. Activities begin at 5:30 p.m. with the freshman football scrimmage at 6 p.m.

Introduction of all the NHS teams for the 2018-19 year begins at 6:50 p.m. Newton High’s Cardinal football varsity scrimmage begins at 7:30 p.m. The Cardinal football season opener at home on Aug. 24.

Fall sports seasons open with Newton High volleyball at home on Aug. 21 and NCMP swimming at Linn-Mar. The NHS cross country teams begin action on Aug. 23.
