Let’s rethink fireworks

Give them an inch and they will take a mile, seems to be the mindset of some Newton citizens. Fireworks started a week before the holiday and have lasted five days after the holiday.

On the Fourth of July, some citizens decided 11 p.m. was not late enough The sounds of fireworks continued to go off until 1:30 a.m. on July 5.

I have spoken with men who suffer from PTSD and pet owners — myself included — who have had more than enough of the loud bangs and booms!

Setting an exact day with specific time fireworks are considered legal, obviously, will not work. There are several communities surrounding us who have now banned the use of fireworks. Before we end this year, I sincerely hope Newton can be added to the list.

I am asking the Newton City Council to please vote against allowing fireworks in the city of Newton.
