North Mahaska sweeps Lynnville-Sully

NEW SHARON — A five-run third inning pushed North Mahaska into the lead, and the Warhawk softball team defeated Class 1A No. 12 Lynnville-Sully, 6-3, during South Iowa Cedar League action on Friday.

The Hawks scored and got within two in the fifth but couldn’t complete their comeback.

Lynnville-Sully has lost four straight games since winning of nine of 10.

Lynnville-Sully had six hits in the loss. Junior Shiloh Cunningham had a pair of hits, including a double, and scored one run and had one RBI.

Senior McKinley Conover also had two hits.

Junior Carson Fisk and freshman Korinne Jansen each had one hit and sophomore Kaleah Ehresman and freshman Caitlin Alberts both scored a run. Ehresman and sophomore Mallory Loftus each had two steals.

Denali Conover started in the circle and took the loss after throwing three innings.

Conover allowed five runs — one earned — on six hits with two walks and one strikeout.

Alberts tossed the final three innings, allowing one run on four hits with two strikeouts.

The loss dropped the Hawks (18-14) into a tie for third in the conference standings with Colfax-Mingo at 12-4. North Mahaska (19-8) improved to 11-5 in SICL play.

The Hawks open Class 1A Region 5 play against either Iowa Valley or Winfield-Mt. Union at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Sully. The Hawks also host the semifinal round.

BASEBALL

North Mahaska 7, Lynnville-Sully 0

The Hawks were held to just five hits in their 7-0 loss to North Mahaska in SICL play on Friday.

The Warhawks scored one in the second and fourth innings and then pulled away with three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Sophomore Slater Young had two of the five hits and stole a base.

Senior Carson Dunsbergen had one hit, one steal and one walk, junior Evan Squires finished with one hit and one walk and senior Corbin James had a hit.

Senior Elijah Collins started on the mound and took the loss after allowing two runs on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Squires tossed the final three innings and allowed five runs — three earned — on seven hits with two walks and one strikeout.

It was the third straight win for North Mahaska (10-8 overall, 8-7 in the SICL) and third straight loss for Lynnville-Sully (9-10, 7-9). Before its losing streak, the Hawks had won six in a row.

The Hawks play Class 2A Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont at 6 p.m. Monday in Eddyville.
