Suspect in Newton attempted murder facing new burglary charge

A Newton woman who was charged with attempted murder last weekend in a car on bicycle incident is back in the Jasper County Jail Thursday morning, after allegedly forcibly breaking into a motel room with a knife.

Roselea T. Procenko, 23, has been charged with first-degree burglary after the Newton police were called at 8:20 p.m. Friday to the Mid-Iowa Motel, 1803 First Ave. E., due to a report of a break-in.

According to the NPD report, the victim said she was sitting in her room when she heard jimmying near the doorknob. A woman, identified as Procenko, forced her way into the victim’s hotel room and swung a knife at the victim, backing her into a corner.

The victim said Procenko continued to swing the knife — described as being half-moon shaped, flat and having a serrated edge on one side — at the victim saying she was going to kill the victim. At that time, a man entered the room, restrained Procenko and removed her from the area.

The NPD later located a knife matching the description given by the victim on the driver’s floorboard of Procenko’s vehicle.

Following her arrest, a Jasper County District Court judge increased Procenko’s bond, which starts at $175,000.
