Lynnville-Sully teams win on home diamonds

SULLY — Sophomore Bray Noun Harder had a big game for Lynnville-Sully’s Hawk baseball team on Monday. Noun Harder threw a one-hit complete game and went 3-for-4 at the plate in the Hawks’ 7-1 win over visiting Montezuma.

While the Hawk baseball team had the lead and held it from the start, Lynnville-Sully’s softball team had to rally on its home field to outlast the Montezuma girls, 8-6. The Hawk wins came in South Iowa Cedar League play.

The Lynnville-Sully baseball team score two runs in the first and three more in the third inning to tai a 5-0 lead. The Hawks, who are 5-8 overall and 4-7 in SICL action, have struggled to keep leads in games, but not on Monday.

Montezuma did plate one run in the fourth inning. Lynnville-Sully got it right back in its half of the frame. The Hawks added a run in the fifth.

Noun Harder was the winning pitcher as he walked three and struck out three. He delivered at the plate also with two doubles and a single.

Sophomore Blaize Kulhmann went 3-for-3 with two singles and a double, and scored three runs of the Hawk baseball team. Seniors Elijah Collins and Carson Dunsbergen and sophomore Slater Young each had two singles. Senior Cody Gibbs singled.

Montezuma’s softball team pulled out to a 5-2 lead after the first inning. Lynnville-Sully battled back with two runs in the third and a run in the fourth to tie the game at 5-all.

The Hawks got a run in the fifth to lead, but the Bravettes knotted the game up again at 6-6 in the top of the sixth. Lynnville-Sully plated the tying and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the inning.

Sophomore Mallory Loftus got the win in relief of starter freshman Denali Conover. Conover was charged with five runs on two hits and one walk in two-thirds of the first innings. Loftus worked 6 2/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits and had three strikeouts.

Freshman Korinne Jansen was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a single, and junior Shiloh Cunningham had two singles and two stolen bases. Senior McKinley Conover had a double and four RBIs. Hitting a single apiece were freshman Caitlin Alberts, junior Carson Fisk and sophomore Janelle Rozendaal.

The Lynnville-Sully softball team is 14-9 overall. With the win, the Hawk girls are 10-2 in SICL play tied atop of the conference with Belle Plaine (10-2 11-7).

Lynnville-Sully’s teams play at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at North Mahaska.
