Lynnville-Sully teams sweep Sigourney in SICL play

SIGOURNEY — Lynnville-Sully’s softball team is on a roll and Class 1A No. 7 Sigourney was in its path on Friday. The Hawk girls outlasted their host in South Iowa Cedar League play to capture a 6-5 victory in eight innings to win their fourth game in a row.

The Hawk baseball team notched its third win in SICL action on the road against the Sigourney Savages, winning going away — 11-1 in five innings. The Hawk boys had 12 hits including a solo home run by junior Evan Squires.

For the Hawk softball team, it has won 8 of its last 10 games, losing to 4A ranked Newton and 3A ranked Albia in that stretch. Lynnville-Sully (13-9) improved to 9-2 in SICL softball play and tied atop the conference with Belle Plaine.

Lynnville-Sully’s baseball team is 3-7 in conference play and is 4-8 overall.

In the softball game, Sigourney scored first in the first inning then Lynnville-Sully pushed a crossed three runs in the top of the third innings. The Hawks were up 4-2 after four innings.

Lynnville-Sully expanded its lead to 5-2 with a run in the sixth. Sigourney rallied to the game at 5-all with a three-run bottom of the sixth.

After a scoreless seventh inning, the teams headed to extra innings. It only took one extra frame for Lynnville-Sully to pull the upset. The Hawks scored a run in the eighth and kept the Savages scoreless.

Freshman Denali Conover got the pitching victory, pitching seven innings, allowing five runs on nine hits and three walks. She struck out seven. Sophomore Mallory Loftus pitched one inning of no-hit, no-run softball with one walk.

Loftus, freshman Caitlin Alberts, junior Shiloh Cunningham and freshman Jansen each had a single and a double in the game. Junior Carson Fisk hit two singles. Loftus had four stolen bases as she is 35-of-35 on stolen base attempts this season.

Lynnville-Sully’s baseball team broke out with a five-run second inning and led 8-1 after three innings. The Hawks added three runs in the fifth.

Sophomore Blaize Kuhlmann was the winning pitcher worked four innings of four-hit baseball allowing one run. He walked six and struck out six. Senior Elijah Collins pitched one inning, giving up one hit and striking out one.

Kuhlmann went 4-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and two singles and drove in two runs. Senior Carson Dunsbergen had three singles. Bray Noun Harder, a sophomore, hit two singles, scored two runs and had an RBI.

Squires had the solo home run. Sophomore Slater Young singled.

The Lynnville-Sully teams host Montezuma’s squads for 6 p.m. SICL games on Monday in Sully.
