Tigerhawk softball rallies past Belle Plaine

COLFAX — The Colfax-Mingo softball team needed three rallies to end Belle Plaine’s four-game win streak.

The Tigerhawks rallied from deficits of 1-0, 4-3 and 6-5 to defeat the Lady Plainsmen on Friday night. Colfax-Mingo plated five runs in the bottom of the sixth and won 10-6 during South Iowa Cedar League action.

It was the fourth straight win for the Tigerhawks, who had 16 hits at the plate. Colfax-Mingo has scored at least 10 runs in its last three conference games and is averaging 11.5 runs during the current four-game win streak.

The Tigerhawks are now 11-9 overall and 7-3 in the SICL. Belle Plaine, which had its four-game win streak snapped, dropped to 10-7 overall and 9-3 in conference play.

Senior Ries Wilson led the Tigerhawks with four hits, one run and one RBI. Juniors Chelsea Russell and Braedynn Rawlins each had three hits. Rawlins drove in three runs, and Russell had two runs and one RBI.

Eighth-grader Kylie Doty, who spent most of her days at a wrestling camp last week, had two hits, two runs and an RBI.

Senior Rhiannon Haley tallied one hit, two runs and one walk, and freshman Madison Gilkison added one hit, two runs and an RBI.

Belle Plaine scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Colfax-Mingo jumped ahead 3-1 with a three-run second.

In the second, Russell and Gilkison had back-to-back singles. Doty then reached on an error, which plated Russell.

Rawlins’ sacrifice fly RBI made it 2-1 and then Wilson had an RBI single to put the home team up 3-1.

Belle Plaine tied the game in the third and then went up 4-3 with another run in the fourth.

C-M went back ahead with a two-run fifth inning. Haley started with a double and then went to third on Russell’s groundout.

Gilkison was then hit by a pitch. Doty’s RBI single brought in Haley and Rawlins’ RBI single drove in Gilkison.

The Lady Plainsmen went ahead 6-5 with a two-run sixth inning, but C-M once again answered with a big frame of its own.

The Tigerhawks’ five-run sixth inning included singles by Wilson and Underwood and a walk to Haley.

Junior Colbee Cunningham drove in the first run with an RBI sacrifice fly and Russell added another run with an RBI single.

Russell eventually scored on a passed ball, and Gilkison plated another run with an RBI sac fly.

Doty followed with a double and then scored on Rawlins’ RBI single.

Cunningham earned the win in the circle for the Tigerhawks.

She allowed six runs — five earned — on eight hits with seven strikeouts and five walks in seven innings.

Colfax-Mingo hosts BGM at 6 p.m. Monday in Colfax.
