PCM boys finish second at Rocket Relays; Tigerhawks win twice

EDDYVILLE — Junior Preston Van Wyk was held out of action and senior Noah Anderson was limited due to leg injuries, but the Prairie City-Monroe boys’ track and field team still managed to finish second at the annual EBF Rocket Relays on Tuesday night.

The Mustangs won only two events, but they grabbed 15 top-three finishes. PCM was only defeated by meet champion Pekin.

Colfax-Mingo also won two events and scored 74 points on the night. Official team standings were unknown at press time.

PCM junior Wes Cummings won the 200-meter dash and junior Payton Strovers collected the gold medal in the long jump.

For Colfax-Mingo, senior Reegan Van Dyke won the high jump, and he teamed up with sophomore Trinity Schroeder, senior Nick Barnes and junior Zarek Hill to win the shuttle hurdle relay.

Cummings won the 200 in 24.11 seconds, but freshman Jacob Van Winkle was right behind him for second in 24.22. C-M freshman AJ Gibson was third in 25.23.

Strovers won the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 7 1/4 inches. Van Dyke’s winning mark in the high jump was 5-6. Gibson was fourth with a leap of 5-4.

The Mustangs also were 2-3 in the 400. Senior Blake Lee was the runner-up in 55.58, and Van Winkle finished third in 58.89.

PCM was second in three other individual events. Freshman Beau Webb was second in the 1,600 with a time of 4 minutes, 52.25 seconds, junior Nick Buswell grabbed the silver in the 110 high hurdles in 16.56 seconds and junior Nigel Sperfslage finished second in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:01.82.

Mustang junior Isaac Telfer was third in shot put and fourth in the discus. Telfer’s throw in the shot put was marked at 41-1 3/4 and his best toss in the discus was 110-5. Junior Brycen Rogers also was fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:17.

Colfax-Mingo’s Lourens was the runner-up in the discus. His best throw was a 128-11

PCM finished at least third in six different relays. Colfax-Mingo won the shuttle hurdle relay and was top-three in three other relays.

The Tigerhawks’ winning shuttle hurdle relay included sophomore Trinity Schroeder, Van Dyke, senior Nick Barnes and junior Zarek Hill, and that foursome finished in 1:02.38. PCM’s shuttle hurdle team of Buswell, junior Nick Dredge, Sperfslage and junior Jarron Trausch finished third in 1:08.09.

PCM’s sprint medley relay team of Strovers, junior Brayton Van Dyke, Anderson and Lee finished second with a time of 1:38.74. Colfax-Mingo’s sprint medley relay team of senior Ethan Summy, junior Holister Koenig, Van Dyke and Hill finished fourth in 1:44.28.

The distance medley relay featured Trausch, freshman Connor Bennett, senior Noah Hirayama and Webb, and that foursome placed second and was clocked at 4:00.01. The Tigerhawks distance medley relay team of junior Cauy Fitch, Gibson, Koenig and sophomore Zack Barnes finished third in 4:07.56.

Colfax-Mingo was second in the 4x400 relay. That foursome included Schroeder, Hill, Summy and Koenig, and they crossed the finish line in 3:44.51. PCM’s 4x400 relay team of Lee, Cummings, Hirayama and Bennett finished third in 3:48.76.

PCM’s 4x100 relay team finished third. That group included Cummings, Bennett, Brayton Van Dyke and Strovers, and they stopped the clock in 46.45 seconds.

The 4x200 team of Strovers, Cummings, Trausch and Anderson finished third in 1:39.46. C-M’s 4x200 relay team of Summy, Schroeder, Reegan Van Dyke and Hill were fourth in 1:39.57.

Colfax-Mingo’s 4x800 relay team of Fitch, senior Alex Lewis and freshmen Colton Hernandez and Hunter Green finished third in 9:42.44.

Both teams will take part in the PCM Boys Track Classic at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in Monroe.
