Cardinal boys win Senior Night tennis dual

Newton High’s Cardinal boys won their second straight tennis dual on Monday in non-conference home meet with Des Moines North.

On Senior Night, the Cardinals handled a young Polar Bear short-handed squad. North had five players — all freshmen — which resulted in Newton winning one singles match and three doubles matches by forfeit.

Newton swept the seven contested matches on the courts at Aurora Heights Park for an 11-0 victory. The Cardinals improve to 2-3 overall.

Seniors Grant Hamand, Devon Van Brogen and Rhandyn Oldfield won their singles matches. Hamand and Van Brogen recorded 6-0, 6-0 decisions over North’s Tan Nguyen and Hugh De Avila, respectively at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.

Oldfield snagged a 6-1, 6-0 win over David Choi at No. 5 singles. Chad Nolin, a senior, won by forfeit at No. 6 singles.

Newton junior Brady Eberline beat North’s Hay Ar Blu, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. Junior Collin Hemann defeated North’s Milo Garton, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.

Eberline and Hemann combined for a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ar Blue and Garton at No. 1 doubles. Hamand and Oldfield posted a 6-1, 6-1 No. 2 doubles win over Nguyen and De Avila.

Nolin and Van Brogen got the forfeit win at No. 3 doubles. The senior duo of Carson Cazett and Cole Cazett took the forfeit at No. 4 doubles. Senior Dylan Main and freshman Trent Hamand was Newton’s winner by forfeit at No. 5 doubles.
