Norwalk beats Cardinal girls in LHC tennis action

Six of the 11 tennis matches contested on Thursday between host Newton High’s girls and Norwalk’s Warrior girls went to a third-set tiebreaker. Unfortunately, the Cardinals were on the winning side of only two of those six matches.

Norwalk won the Little Hawkeye Conference dual, 8-3, at Aurora Heights Park.

Senior Harlie Durr pulled out a 6-4, 4-6, 10-2 win over Norwalk’s Rachel Lesley at No. 4 singles. Senior Kallista Rogers and freshman Jamie Rogers nailed down a 7-5, 3-6, 10-6 win over Norwalk’s Jenna Agey and Katy Faust at No. 5 doubles.

Playing at No. 1 singles for the first time this season for Newton, senior Kinzie Loree lost 6-2, 6-1 to Norwalk’s Nicole Alexander. Newton senior Natalie Camp fell 6-1, 6-1 to Emma Tollefson at No. 2 singles.

Junior Emily Valtman claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win against Norwalk’s Jordan Bandy at No. 3 singles. Valtman is 3-1 on the season in singles play.

Senior Alexis Hoffman lost a tough two-set match — 6-4, 7-6 (1) — to Norwalk’s Madison Thielen at No. 5 singles, Norwalk’s Kennedi Wright rallied past Newton sophomore Ashley Loehr, 2-6, 6-2, 10-0 in the No. 6 singles match.

Loree and Camp lost 6-1, 6-0 to Norwalk’s Alexander and Bandy at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Tollefson and Lesley outlasted Newton’s Valtman and Durr 3-6, 7-6, 10-5 at No. 2 doubles.

Newton’s Hoffman and Loehr lost at No. 3 doubles as Norwalk’s Thielen and Wright won 6-4, 3-6, 10-0. At No. 4 doubles, Norwalk’s Rebecca Scribano and Ellie Riter beat Newton’s senior duo of Rylie Bakalar and Madison Bleeker, 6-3, 4-6, 10-4.

The Cardinals dropped to 1-2 in LHC action and 1-3 overall. They play in a LHC dual at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday at Pella Christian.
