Kwik Star poised for construction

With the former building cleared and a design approved, Kwik Star is set to begin construction this spring. The grocery store-style convenience store is set to open later this year at the former Lauterbach Buick GMC dealership location, 1910 First Ave. E.

“Kwik Star is approved, and I think we will see the building going up really soon,” city administrator Matt Muckler said.

The La Crosse, Wis.-based business purchased the property last August and is expecting to build a 7,000 square-foot building. Kwik Star Director of Real Estate Hans Zietlow said the total construction time, not including the demolition of the former car dealership structure, should take about three months. The new location will feature the convenience store’s latest layout which includes a full-service bakery.

Zietlow said the Kwik Star in Newton will be looking to fill 25 to 30 positions with a third of those being for full-time employees. The hiring process has started for the store and those who are interested in a position can find applications online.

“The total annual income for those employees all together will be around $500,000,” Zietlow said. “We take care of our employees here.”

Zietlow said he expects the building to be a great addition to Newton and to the east side of town. Located on the main stretch in Newton, the store will have great visibility for those traveling throughout town.

“I’ve visited Newton a few times, and I think Kwik Star will really add to the city,” Zietlow said. “We are excited to come to Newton.”

The building was up for grabs after Lauterbach Buick GMC moved out of the space and down the street to 2900 First Ave. E. in October. According to Birkenholz Realty in Newton, the sale price of the property was $415,000.
