Supervisors OK dumpsters in front of Annex for Maytag renovation

With the Hotel Maytag restoration underway, contractors on the project are looking to expand where they can place roll off dumpsters around the building.

The Jasper County Board of Supervisors approved Chuck Steeples, project manager at Iowa Demolition, to place a dumpster on two parking spaces in front of the Jasper County Annex Building, adjacent to the project during its Tuesday meeting.

“We’re working on the historical remodel of Hotel Maytag. Our company is doing the historical selective demolition and a division of ours is also doing the asbestos abatement of the building, as well,” Steeples said. “One of the issues we are running into is getting the material out of the building.”

Steeples said there is a lot of material that needs to come out and the current set up of one dumpster located in front of the building is not keeping to the standards he would like. Three locations were proposed to the board, all in areas around the annex building.

The first has the dumpster located on two parking spots on the city street northwest side of the annex building. The second placed the dumpster on several parking spots on the west side of the annex building and the third would have it at the rear of the annex building on the southwest corner.

“We’re here to be good neighbors, so we want to make sure it works for everybody,” Steeples said. “Option one, even though it is a city street, it still impacts your building because that is where the public parks.”

The board unanimously approved the first on street option, leaving the dumpster on the city street and not on county property. Steeples said the dumpsters first stint in the location will be until April 13. It will be removed for a couple of weeks, returning at the beginning of May and will be there for another three to four weeks.

“One of the things I would be concerned about in general is people’s health around the dust (for the abatement),” supervisor Doug Cupples said.

Steeples said all abatement work is being located in the lot across the street. It is being completely wrapped and sealed in plastic and taped off before being placed in the special container for abatement work. He did mention a time in the future when the special container might move across the street as work begins in the basement. Any abated material will still go through the same process of being completely sealed off before being placed into the dumpster.
