PCM’s Van Ryswyk named to Class 2A Substate 7 team

PCM junior Andrew Van Ryswyk led the Mustangs in points, rebounds and blocks per game and shooting percentage this past season.

For those efforts, and because of the double-double he recorded in the first postseason game against Colfax-Mingo, Van Ryswyk was named to the Class 2A all-Substate 7 squad recently. He also had a near double-double in the district semifinal loss to West Marshall.

Van Ryswyk was one of eight players named to the team. He averaged a team-best 12.4 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.18 blocks per game.

He also dished out 2.1 assists and swiped 1.14 steals per game for the Mustangs, who were 16-6 this season.

Van Ryswyk led the Mustangs in field goal percentage at 57 percent, and he made 34 percent from long range.

Van Ryswyk hit 21 3-pointers in all and his 9.5 rebounds per game ranked 13th in 2A.

The rest of the 2A Substate 7 team included Colfax-Mingo’s Jarod Nichols, East Marshall’s Zaine Leedom, Tyler DeBondt and Zane Johnson, South Hamilton’s Marco Balderas and Connor Hill and West Marshall’s Payton Pope.

The substate teams were selected by the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association. That group also selected a Mr. Iowa Basketball and players of the year in each class.

This year’s Mr. Basketball for the IBCA and the Iowa Press Sports Writers Association was Muscatine’s Joe Wieskamp.

Wieskamp averaged 33.7 points and 13.5 rebounds in leading the Muskies to the 4A state tournament for the first time in 20 years.

Wieskamp will play collegiately for the Hawkeyes.

The IBCA’s Players of the Year in each class were Cedar Falls’ A.J. Green in 4A, Cedar Rapids Xavier’s Matt Mims in 3A, Aplington-Parkersburg’s Alec Oberhauser in 2A and Jake Hilmer of North Linn in 1A.
