Colfax man accused of stealing county rock

A Colfax man is accused of stealing 500 pounds of rock from the Jasper County Roads Department Monday. Clarence J. Ellison, 56, was arrested after he was seen by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office loading rock into the bed of his pickup.

Ellison was spotted by law enforcement at 2:18 p.m. Feb. 19 in the 9200 block of Highway F48 West, and he attempted to leave the area when he was approached by a deputy, according to a JCSO report.

He told law enforcement he had permission to take the rock for his own personal use. When the Jasper County Roads Supervisors were notified, they confirmed they hadn’t given Ellison permission to take the rock.

There were approximately 500 pounds of rock in the bed of his truck valued between $1-3, according to the JCSO. Ellison is charged with fifth-degree theft.

He was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail where he was released on $600 bond.
