Cardinal boys knock off Pella, girls fall to ranked Lady Dutch; Area basketball roundup

Four of the five area high schools were in basketball action Friday night, and they were all on the road. Newton split a doubleheader at Pella. Lynnville-Sully won two on while Baxter split a twin bill and Colfax-Mingo lost two.

Newton boys 65, 3A No. 10 Pella boys 49

PELLA — For the second straight year, Newton High’s Cardinal boys have gone into the Pella Dutch’s gym and claimed a Little Hawkeye Conference victory. Led by senior point guard Garrett Sturtz’s 33 points, the Cardinals knock off the Class 3A 10th-ranked Dutch, 65-49, on Friday night.

Junior Aaron Bartels set the tone quickly for the Cardinals, scoring the team’s first eight points for an 8-2 lead. Bartels drained back-to-back 3-pointers in the run. He finished with 17 points.

“We knew going into it was going to be a tough battle,” Sturtz said after the game. “It was a back-and-forth game and we were up for that challenge. Aaron played really well, coming up with big plays from knocking down a shot or getting us extra possessions.”

The Dutch rallied to lead 16-13 on a Ryan Gustafson’s trey at the end of the first quarter. Sturtz had just two points in the first quarter. That changed in the second period.

Sophomore Quintrail Coley had a six-point outburst in the second quarter for Newton while Sturtz fired in 13 points. Newton outscored Pella 21-8 to claim a 34-24 halftime lead.

The Dutch made a run at the Cardinals to trim the margin to 38-34 in the third quarter. Senior Grant Garvis made a steal and scored to trigger 7-2 run by the Cardinals for a 45-37 lead.

“I’d call that the play of the game. It really switched the momentum for us,” Sturtz said. “Yes, they did make another run at us, but we were able to hit free throws down the stretch to get the victory.”

Gustafson, who hit five 3-pointers on his way to 19 points, drilled a trey followed by a basket by Logan Shetterly for Pella, drawing the Dutch to within one point, 45-40, with five minutes left in the game. Newton responded with a 5-0 run.

Sturtz opened the march to the free-throw line for Newton with 2:44 left. The Cardinals sealed the win at the line as they finished 23-of-25 on free throw attempts for the game. Sturtz was 15-of-17 from the line.

The Dutch got 15 points from Nick DeYoung.

Newton improved to 6-2 overall. Newton and Pella (7-3) are both 3-2 in LHC play.

The Cardinals host Knoxville in a 2 p.m. non-conference game on Saturday. They are at 3A top-ranked Norwalk in LHC play on Tuesday.

Class 4A No. 12 Pella girls 65, Newton girls 39

PELLA — Turnovers thwarted the Newton High girls’ effort to upend Class 4A 12th-ranked Pella Lady Dutch on Friday. The Cardinals had double digit turnovers in a Little Hawkeye Conference game which the score difference bounced from six to 10 points most of the contest.

The Lady Dutch finally pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 65-39 victory. Pella improved to 7-3 overall and 3-2 in LHC play while Newton dropped to 3-6 overall and 1-4 in conference action.

Newton had 25 turnovers in the game. Foul trouble helped trip up the Cardinals also as the team’s leading scorer, senior guard Randi Walters was saddled with three fouls by the 4-minute mark of the second quarter.

Walters fouled out of the game with 4:43 to play in the contest. She finished with six points.

The Cardinals led 8-6 on a 3-pointer by junior Peyton Maher midway through the first quarter. A 3-pointer by junior Marcelina Marvelli had the Cardinals within two points, 13-11, at the end of the period.

Through much of the first half of the second quarter it was a two or three-point game. Walters picked up her third foul and a couple of turnovers to allow Pella stretch its lead to 31-22 by halftime.

Marvelli drilled a 3-pointer to open the third quarter to make it 31-25. Newton couldn’t get any closer. Each team scored 14 points in the period to make it 45-36 heading into the fourth quarter.

Newton scored the first basket of the final period then only had one more point in the game. Pella outscored Newton 20-3 down the stretch.

Marvelli led Newton with eight points, hitting two of the team’s four 3-pointers. Senior Taylor Ryan and Maher each had seven points. The Cardinals were 15-of-41. 36.5 percent,, from the field.

Pella sank 16-of-29 free throw attempts to Newton’s 5-of-7 stint at the line. The Lady Dutch had a 26-18 edge in rebounding. Senior Ali Bestell had four rebounds for Newton and Maher had three of the team’s eight assists.

Chloe Van Vliet led all scorers with 16 points. Caroline Bradley came off the Pella bench for 11 points and Emily Holterhaus added 10 points.

Newton hosts Knoxville at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in non-conference play. The Cardinals go to Norwalk on Tuesday in LHC action.

Lynnville-Sully teams sweep past host English Valleys

NORTH ENGLISH — Lynnville-Sully’s basketball teams rolled past the English Valleys’ squads in a South Iowa Cedar League doubleheader Friday night. Neither game was close as the Hawk girls notched a 52-29 win while the Class 1A seventh-ranked Hawk boys kept the Bear boys winless with a 79-16 win.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls were up 10-2 after the first quarter and held a 29-11 halftime lead. The Hawks had three players score in double figures led by Mallory Loftus with 13 points.

Carson Fisk posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Mariah Vos had 11 points and nine rebounds. Fisk and Vos each had three steals.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls held a 51-30 rebounding edge. They went 11-of-27 from the free-throw line. The Hawk girls improved to 7-3 in SICL play and 9-3 overall.

English Valley’s girls (6-5, 4-5) got nine points and eight rebounds from Audrey Grove.

The Hawk boys dominated from the opening tip, leading 36-3 after one quarter. They stretched their 47-10 halftime lead with a 25-2 run in the third quarter. English Valleys had 32 turnovers in the game.

Jesse Van Wyk fired in 21 points, pushing his career total to 870 points, and handled four rebounds for the Hawks. Brevin Hansen had 14 points, steals and three assists. Corey McCoy had five rebounds.

Lynnville-Sully shot 61 percent, 30-of-49, from the field and hit 14-of-19 free throw attempts. The Hawks held a 33-14 rebounding advantage as they moved to 9-0 in SICL play and 9-1 overall.

English Valleys shot 18 percent from the field. Clayton Moore had seven points and four rebounds to lead the Bears (0-11, 0-10).

Lynnville-Sully hosts Iowa Valley on Tuesday in Sully.

Baxter boys 51, Clarksville boys 49

CLARKSVILLE — Sophomore Cole Damman buried the game-winning 3-pointer with 2.5 seconds left to propel the Baxter boys' basketball team to a 51-49 road win over Clarksville on Friday night during an Iowa Star Conference cross-division game.

The Bolts trailed by five at halftime but rallied in the second half. They took a one-point lead after three quarters with an 11-5 advantage in the third.

Clarksville jumped back in front in the fourth until Damman hit the game-winning trey. The Indians were fouled at the other end of the floor after a long pass but missed both free throws. Senior Braydon Aker rebounded the second miss and the clock ran out,

The win improves Baxter to 5-4 overall. The Bolts came into the game losers of three of their last four games and two straight.

Clarksville fell to 3-8 on the season.

Clarksville girls 45, Baxter girls 37

CLARKSVILLE — The Baxter girls basketball team failed to hold a halftime lead for the second straight night, falling to Clarksville on the road Friday night in an Iowa Star Conference cross-division matchup.

The Bolts led by two at halftime but was outscored 10-3 in the third and 13-10 in the fourth during a 45-37 loss.

It was Baxter's sixth straight loss. The Bolts dropped to 1-10 on the season, while the Indians won their third in a row and is now 12-2 on the year.

Keota girls 39, Colfax-Mingo girls 36

KEOTA — The Keota girls' basketball team won its first game of the season against a short-handed Colfax-Mingo squad on Friday night during South Iowa Cedar League action.

It was tough going on the offensive end of the floor for the Tigerhawks, who didn't have the services of their only two seniors. Ries Wilson is out with an injury and McKeely Tjaden is gone until next week because of a family vacation.

Junior Payton Rhone buried three 3-pointers and scored 11 points to lead the Tigerhawks, who dropped to 3-9 overall and 3-6 in conference games. Rhone also grabbed three rebounds, blocked three shots and collected two steals.

Junior Delaney Underwood hit two treys and scored nine points with four rebounds and two steals. Junior Jordan Atwood added eight points and five rebounds, freshman Brennan Rhone scored five points and junior Colbee Cunningham grabbed four rebounds and collected two steals.

The Tigerhawks are stuck in a four-game skid.

Addison Sprouse scored 21 points for Keota, which is now 1-11 overall and 1-8 in conference play. Sprouse hit four 3-pointers. Addison Swanson added 10 points for the Eagles, who snapped a 35-game losing streak.

Keota boys 68, Colfax-Mingo boys 63

KEOTA — Colfax-Mingo's seven-game win steak expired after JD Stout scored 28 points and Jack Eakins added 23 in a 68-63 win for Keota at home during South Iowa Cedar League action Friday night.

The Tigerhawks got double-doubles from seniors Jarod Nichols, Jonathan Jacobs and Reegan Van Dyke, but the Eagles broke a 45-all tie after three quarters with a 23-18 advantage in the fourth.

Colfax-Mingo drew even after three despite trailing 34-29 at halftime.

Nichols recorded his 10th double-double in 11 games with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Van Dyke chipped in 10 points and 10 rebounds and Jacobs added 11 points and 10 assists.

Senior Alex Lewis scored 13 points and dished out three assists for the Tigerhawks, who fell to 8-3 overall and 6-3 in conference play.

Sophomore Brady Berkey added 10 points and four assists, and senior Misha Seebeck dished out four assists.

The Tigerhawks were 4-of-6 from the free-throw line and were called for 22 fouls. Keota (8-3, 6-2) attempted 31 free throws and were whistled for 12 fouls at home.
