Tigerhawks win Lynnville-Sully Dual Tourney

SULLY — Round Three was the match-up of the two Jasper County wrestling teams in the 2017 Lynnville-Sully Dual Tournament — Colfax-Mingo’s Tigerhawks squared off against the host Lynnville-Sully Hawks.

But it was the dual in Round Five between the Tigerhawks and the Knoxville Panthers which determined the championship. It pitted the two teams with the most wrestlers — Colfax-Mingo had 13 competitors and Knoxville had 12.

The Tigerhawks won seven of the 11 matches contested on the mat and two more by forfeits. They held off the Panthers for a 36-34 dual victory to go 5-0 on the day. Colfax-Mingo collected the team championship plaque as the Tigerhawks improved to 18-1 in dual action this season.

Knoxville went 4-1. Lynnville-Sully, which had seven wrestlers, fell to Centerville, 42-39, to settle third-place. Centerville’s junior varsity, which had 10 wrestlers, had a 3-2 mark for the day and the Hawks were 2-3.

North Mahaska had three wrestlers and Cardinal had two wrestlers. North Mahaska went 1-4 and Cardinal was 0-5.

When the Hawks and Tigerhawks met in Round 3, Lynnville-Sully rang up three wins in the five contested matches. The Hawks had one more win via forfeit but the Tigerhawks had seven forfeit wins to claim a 54-21 dual victory.

“I’m proud of our effort and fight,” Colfax-Mingo head coach Erin Hume said. “We got pins when we needed them, and we got kids to go six minutes when we needed them to.”

Any wrestlers who went 5-0 on the day were awarded medals. Colfax-Mingo had five wrestlers and Lynnville-Sully had two wrestlers to receive medals for the day’s work.

Colfax-Mingo’s Zach Barnes had three wins on the mat among his five wins, including two pins and a technical fall at 113. Cauy Fitch at 120, Chance Rice at 170 and Skyler Aikin at 220 each notched two wins on the mat en route their five wins.

Rice, who is ranked No. 4 in Class 1A at 160, wrestled up a weight class on the day and recorded his 100th-career win with a forfeit against Cardinal. Class 1A seventh-ranked Colton Lourens only had one contested match on the day at 285. It was a big 11-4 decision against Knoxville’s Chase Bellon.

“Skyler had a huge win for us against Knoxville. Both teams made some slight adjustments to their lineups, and Skyler stepped up against a tough kid and got the pin,” Hume said. “Colton was tested against a smaller — probably faster — kid, but a six-minute match was good for him.”

Lynnville-Sully’s seniors Josh Dunsbergen and Carson Dunsbergen went 5-0. Carson Dunsbergen posted three wins by pins at 145 pounds and Josh Dunsbergen had a pin of Colfax-Mingo’s Tim Carroll and a pin against Centerville. Following the day’s action, Josh Dunsbergen is 15-0.

“It was a great day of wrestling with some good matches,” Lynnville-Sully head coach Jason Walston said. “We learned a lot, but still need to keep improving every day.”

The Hawks saw senior Sage Zylstra in action for the first time this season. Wrestling at 182, Zylstra went 4-1 including a pin of Colfax-Mingo’s Damir Gumerov with one second left in the match. Senior Cayden Johnson was 3-1 at 152, pulling out a 14-9 win over Colfax-Mingo’s Trystin Ross.

Junior Ben Van Wyk and freshman CJ Snethen were 3-2 at 113 and 120, respectively, for the Hawks. Freshman Kodie Waggoner was 2-2 at 126 pounds.

Against Lynnville-Sully, Colfax-Mingo’s Barnes pinned Van Wyk in 2 minutes, 14 seconds. Cauy Fitch quickly dispatched Snethen at 120 with a fall in 51 seconds.

Colfax-Mingo and Lynnville-Sully concluded their first semester of action. After the holiday break, the two area teams meet again on Jan. 4 in a quadrangular dual meet with Sigourney and host HLV at Victor.
