Tigerhawks split doubleheader with 3A Saydel

DES MOINES — Colfax-Mingo’s boys basketball team got another double-double from senior Jarod Nichols, and a big fourth quarter by senior Jonathan Jacobs helped the Tigerhawks pull away from Class 3A Saydel on Thursday night.

Colfax-Mingo and Saydel even throughout the first three quarters, but the Tigerhawks’ big fourth period led to a 52-44 win. Jacobs scored seven of his 11 points in the deciding frame.

Nichols finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds in the win, and senior Alex Lewis recorded the first double-double of his career with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Lewis scored eight of those 11 in the first half.

Jacobs added seven assists, three steals and three rebounds to his 11 points. Sophomore Brady Berkey tallied six points, three assists and three steals.

Senior Reegan Van Dyke left the game in the second quarter with an ankle injury.

The Tigerhawks collected 16 assists on 18 field goals and finished with 10 steals and just 11 turnovers. Colfax-Mingo had a 14-point advantage from the free-throw line.

The game was tied at 23-all at halftime. Saydel led by one after three quarters, but Colfax-Mingo won the fourth 15-6. The Tigerhawks (4-2) have won three straight games.

Eight Saydel players scored, and Colton Myers led the way with 10.

The Eagles (1-7) buried eight 3-pointers in the loss.

Colfax-Mingo hosts English Valleys in a South Iowa Cedar League contest at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The varsity girls’ game tips off at 6 p.m.

GIRLS

Saydel 48,

Colfax-Mingo 46

Down by double-figures in the second half, the Colfax-Mingo girls rallied to take a two-point lead in the fourth quarter but couldn’t hold on against 3A Saydel on Thursday night.

Three Eagles scored in double-figures, and Saydel held on for a 48-46 non-conference home win.

Saydel led Colfax-Mingo 31-20 at halftime.

The Tigerhawks rallied to go in front in the fourth, but the Eagles recovered to end a five-game losing streak.

Colfax-Mingo senior Ries Wilson came into the game averaging 4.7 points per game, but she scored a team-high 12 in the loss.

Junior Payton Rhone nailed three 3-pointers and scored nine points, and junior Delaney Underwood made four free throws and scored six.

Senior McKeely Tjaden added five points, and juniors Jordan Atwood and Colbee Cunningham each scored four.

Saydel’s Hannah Bowman entered Thursday averaging 5.6 points per game, but she led all scorers with 16.

Leading scorer Katie Schmidt put in 13 and Destiny Butters also scored five more than her season average, finishing with 10.

The Tigerhawks lost a second straight game and are now 2-5 overall.

Saydel improved to 2-6 on the season.
