NORWALK — Down 35-0 to Norwalk, Newton High’s wrestling team needed a lift in its Little Hawkeye Conference dual. It got it from senior Tristin Langmaid in the 152-pound match on Thursday night.

Langmaid opened his match with a takedown of Norwalk’s Tristen Duncan in the first period. Up 2-0 going into the second stanza, Duncan escaped twice, but Langmaid responded with two takedowns for a 6-2 lead.

In the third period, Langmaid scored a takedown then tallied three more points for a near fall. Langmaid won an 11-2 major decision to get Newton on the scoreboard. The Cardinals could not rally against the hosting Warriors, losing 59-13.

Norwalk has four ranked wrestlers in Class 3A — they all won Thursday night — and the Warriors had six wins by pins and two forfeit victories. Newton won three matches, one by fall.

Junior Jaise Gulling had to work a little longer than others to claim his win at 195 pounds for the Cardinals. Gulling and Norwalk’s Nate Heckart had a scoreless first period then Gulling took a 1-0 lead on an escape in the second period.

Heckart did the same in the third period. Gulling and Heckart were tied 1-all after the end of regulation. That was still the score after the one-minute overtime period. In the ultimate tie-breaker — two 30-second periods — Gulling had an escape to win 3-2.

At 285, Newton senior Landon Hansen had the quickest match of the night. Hansen pinned Norwalk’s Bryce Kohls in 24 seconds.

Norwalk jumped out to a 12-0 lead on forfeit wins at 113 and 120. Newton senior Ross Hull and sophomore Canaan Terpstra lost by falls at 126 pounds and 132 pounds, respectively, in 3 minutes, 16 seconds and 3:17.

Sophomore Blake Iske faced Norwalk junior Carter Schmidt, who is ranked No. 9, in the 138-pound match. Schmidt recorded a 16-0 technical fall over Iske at the 4:25 mark. Norwalk’s Ethan Vetterick pinned sophomore Zane Kohlmeyer in 58 seconds at 145 pounds.

After Langmaid’s win for Newton, senior Josh Miravalles almost got through two periods against Norwalk’s Trey Wulf in the 160-pound bout. Wulf pinned Miravalles at the 3:54 mark.

Newton sophomore Destin Schroder faced Norwalk senior Jack Livingston, who is ranked No. 9, in the 170-pound match. Schroder trailed 2-1 after the first period and tied it up with an escape in the second period.

Livingston pushed back in front 4-3 heading into the third period. Livingston chose to start in the bottom position, scored an escape then a takedown to beat Schroder 7-3.

The 182-pound match had a scoreless first period but Norwalk’s Nick Foster built a 5-1 lead over Newton senior Blayden Rhone by the end of the second stanza. Rhone had a reversal for two points in the third period, but lost 6-3.

Newton trailed Norwalk 47-7 when Newton sophomore Gage Linahon stepped on the mat against fifth-ranked Drake Leek of Norwalk at 220. Linahon trailed 2-1 after one period and tied it up with an escape to begin the second period. Leek had a takedown then pinned Linahon with 1:06 left in the period.

Two freshmen squared off in the final match of the night at 106. Norwalk’s Grant Harbour is ranked No. 8 in 3A and was able to record a pin of Newton’s Anthony Bestell in 1:05.

Newton won six of the eight junior varsity matches against Norwalk. Owen Sanger and Thomas Cox each had a pin at 182 pounds, Gabe Hoen won by pin at 195 while in 220-pound matches, Lazarus Frisch-Johnson and Isaac Bebout won by falls. Caydin Harper had a win by injury default at 285.

Newton’s varsity dropped to 1-2 in Little Hawkeye Conference dual action. The Cardinals are 5-5 overall in duals. They finish their duals for the first semester on Tuesday at Prairie City-Monroe.

Before that Newton’s varsity competes at the Fort Dodge Invitational at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Fort Dodge. The junior varsity is at an invitational tournament at 8 a.m. Saturday hosted by North Polk in Alleman.
