Tigerhawks take down former HOIC rivals

JEWELL — The Colfax-Mingo wrestling team faced off against three teams it used to call conference rivals on Thursday night.

And they returned home from a long road trip with three victories.

The Tigerhawks are now 8-1 on the season following wins over South Hamilton, Saydel and Roland-Story.

Sophomores Zack Barnes (113), Cyden Fitch (126) and Trystin Ross (152), junior Cauy Fitch (120) and seniors Chance Rice (170) and Colton Lourens (285) all went 3-0 on the night to lead the way for the Tigerhawks.

Colfax-Mingo opened the night with a 45-33 win over South Hamilton and then took down Class 2A Saydel 57-24. The Tigerhawks completed the quadrangular sweep with a 47-33 win over 2A Roland-Story.

“There was great effort and fight tonight,” Colfax-Mingo coach Erin Hume said. “It took everybody to get the job done.”

The Tigerhawks gave South Hamilton two forfeits and still beat the Hawks by 12 because they went 8-4 in contested matches. Seven of those wins were by pins from Barnes, Cauy Fitch, Cyden Fitch, Ross, Rice, junior Skyler Aikin and Lourens. Sophomore Tim Carroll also won his match 6-5.

Saydel gave Colfax-Mingo 30 points in forfeits in the second dual. The Tigerhawks went 3-2 in contested matches with wins coming from Ross (5-3 in overtime), Cauy Fitch (pin) and Cyden Fitch (pin).

Colfax-Mingo and Roland-Story were 5-5 against each other in contested matches, but the Tigerhawks won 29-27 in those 10 matches.

Each team had four pins, but Rice’s technical fall win at 170 was the difference.

The Tigerhawks also had a 12-point advantage in forfeits.

Cauy Fitch, who is ranked 10th at 120 pounds in 1A, and Cyden Fitch won all three of their matches by fall.

Lourens received two forfeits and pinned his other opponent in 17 seconds.

Barnes also had one pin and took two forfeits.

Rice, who is ranked fifth at 160 pounds, recorded one pin and one technical fall and took one forfeit at 170, and Ross scored two pins and one overtime decision.

Sophomore Noah Strohmeyer went 2-1 with two forfeits and junior Skyler Aikin was 2-1 with a win by pin and a win by forfeit.

The Tigerhawks compete in a South Iowa Cedar League quadrangular at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Brooklyn.

Colfax-Mingo takes on BGM, Belle Plaine and Montezuma.
