Newton wrestlers take down Toreadors

BOONE — Two quick pins on the mat pushed Newton High’s Cardinals to a 23-9 lead over host Boone in Tuesday’s season-opening wrestling match. The Cardinals had to rally after falling behind 33-23, winning the final four matches of the dual to notch a 45-33 victory.

“I thought our kids wrestled hard and aggressive,” Newton head coach Andy Swedenhjelm said. “I am excited to see how we improve from here.”

Ross Hull began his senior season with a pin of Boone’s Jace Schultz in 24 seconds of their 126-pound match. Sophomore Canaan Terpstra was almost as fast as his Newton teammate, pinning Boone’s Kaden Zanoni in 25 seconds at 132.

The non-conference dual began with Boone’s Jordan Angle racking up a 12-5 decision over Newton junior Isaac Bebout at 285. Two freshmen scored 11 team points for the Cardinals as Griffen Fry won by forfeit at 106 followed by Anthony Bestell rolling up a 16-1 technical fall over Boone’s Skyler Walters at 113 pounds.

Boone collected six team points on a forfeit in at 120 pounds. That was followed by Hull and Terpstra’s victories.

The Toreadors gained the advantage in the team score with four straight wins. Newton sophomores Blake Iske and Zane Kohlmeyer were pinned in the second periods of their 138-pound and 145-pound, respectively, matches.

Boone’s Norbert Riyazimana, who wrestled for Newton two years ago, won by forfeit at 152.

Newton senior Tristin Langmaid led Boone’s Jimmy Boustead 2-1 when he went for a takedown and was caught off balanced. Boustead pinned Langmaid at the 1:50 mark of he 160-pound match.

Boone had a 10-point lead over the Cardinals.

In the 170-pound match, sophomore Destin Schroder started Newton’s comeback. Schroder took Boone’s Taner Harvey down right to his back for four points. By the end of the second period, Schroder led 9-0. He scored a reversal to open the third frame and won 11-2.

“Destin did a great job of setting the tempo in his match and controlling it from the beginning,” Swedenhjelm said. “Anthony Bestell and Canaan Terpstra made their debut and went out with confidence to wrestle their matches. We are excited for Thursday.”

Senior Blayden Rhone’s forfeit win at 182 tied the dual at 33-33. It was up to junior Jaise Gulling and sophomore Gage Linahon to provide the winning points for Newton. They didn’t disappoint.

Gulling gained a 4-0 lead over Boone’s Logan Ashby in the 195-pound bout. He pinned Ashby at the 1:51 mark of the match.

Finishing up the competition was the 220-pound match between Linahon and Boone’s Caleb Pierce. Linahon, who was Newton’s state tournament qualifier a year ago, got the takedown and worked Pierce to his back Linahon pinned Pierce with 49 seconds left in the first period.

In two junior varsity matches, Newton’s Bobby Yarges pinned Wade Penick in 1:01 at 132 pounds and Joseph Carolus pinned Boone’s Wyatt Oppedahl at the 5-minute mark.

Newton has its home opening dual — a Little Hawkeye Conference dual — against Indianola at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The junior varsity matches start at 6:30 p.m.
