PELLA — The Prairie City-Monroe boys’ cross country team has a lot of characteristics of the girls’ squad from three years ago.
PCM coach Eric Karr likes what he sees, but the group is a few years away still.
The Mustangs ended their season at the Class 2A state qualifier at Central College on Thursday. PCM placed 11th in the 14-team field with 314 points.
“This boys’ team reminds me a lot of the girls’ team three years,” Karr said. “’Hey, we’re getting better. Hey, a year or two down the road.’ I look at the big picture, and I am happy where they are at even though they want it right now.”
The top 15 individuals and the top three teams at each state qualifier advance to the state track meet in Fort Dodge on Oct. 28.
PCM’s top finisher was sophomore Jason Stafford, who was 37th with a time of 19 minutes, 5 seconds.
Stafford was followed by freshman Beau Webb and senior Brady North, who were 56th and 59th, respectively. Webb finished in 19:54.7 and North crossed the finish line in 20:09.3.
“We had about five PRs. I tell them every meet to do the best that you can, and I believe they did that tonight,” Karr said.
Second-ranked Mid Prairie won the meet with 23 points.
Fifteenth-ranked Des Moines Christian (65) and fifth-ranked Williamsburg (77) also clinched state berths.
Mid Prairie’s Floyd Evans, who is ranked 13th, won the race in 17:02.4. Twelve runners finished in less than 18 minutes.
