Newton High’s junior varsity have dropped two football games in a row. The Cardinals lost at home Thursday, 46-23, to Southeast Polk then fell 48-6 to Ankeny Centennial on Monday in Ankeny.
Against SEP, the Cardinals trailed 7-0 when Josh Meyer kicked 29-yard field goal to make it 7-3 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, a scoop-and-score fumble recovery by Kalob Dydell for a TD with Meyer kicking the extra point, make it 13-10.
The Rams expanded their lead to 19-10 by halftime, scoring on a 75-yard pass play. Newton got no closer.
Newton scored twice in the second half on two touchdown passes by Kyle Long. Long hooked up with Logan Cummins on a 23-yard play in the third quarter. Late in the game, Long threw a 7-yard scoring pass to Will Cheng and Meyer kicked the extra point.
Cummins rushed for 82 yards on 12 carries for Newton. Long was 6-of-16 for 80 yards passing.
Reece Caves, Lucas Clayton and Dydell were the Newton defensive leaders against SEP.
On Monday, the Cardinals fell behind Ankeny Centennial’s Jaguars 34-0 by halftime. No individual statistics were available by presstime on Monday’s game.
The Cardinal junior varsity plays at 7 p.m. on Monday against Clarke in Osceola.
