NCMP decks Boone on Senior Night

Senior Night brings a certain energy to a high school event. NCMP’s Aquagirls had that energy going for them on Tuesday against Boone’s Toreadors.

The Aquagirls showed no effects for back-to-back morning practices in their final home dual meet of the 2017 season. Winning nine of 11 varsity events, NCMP beat visiting Boone 110-60. In the junior varsity division, the Aquagirls won eight of 11 events for a 109-47 win.

“The girls were fired up tonight. They were tired with morning practice yesterday and today, but they were just ready to come swim,” NCMP head coach Sarah Patterson said. “We’ve come such a long ways as a team working through several bumps in the road, which has made these girls even closer.”

Patterson said Boone provided a solid dual meet for the Aquagirls as they prepare for two conference meets next week. She said it was good to have close races at this point in the season.

“Looking at the team scores, it looks one sided, but Boone gave us good races in almost every event. We needed that,” Patterson said. “With it being Senior Night, the girls swam for each other tonight wanting the seniors’ final home meet to be a team victory. When you do that, it is a momentum you cannot duplicate any other way.”

In varsity action, NCMP won all three relays starting with a 1-2 finish in the opening event — the 200-meter medley relay. The team of Lakin Jenkins, Lindsey Blommers, Makenna Brooks and Jaclyn Michener won in 2 minutes, 13.61 seconds followed by teammates Rachel Boll, Allison Paulius, Chloe Kibbee and Abbie Hill in 2:22.42.

Alex Inskeep claimed individual wins in the 200 freestyle in 2:24.53 and the 100 freestyle in 1:06.26. She beat Boone’s Haley Hall, who would later win the 400 freestyle, by a second in the 200 freestyle race.

“Alex had a great meet. She beat the Boone girl, who is seeded ahead of her in the 200 freestyle,” Patterson said. “Jaclyn Michener had her best split times of the entire season. This was a good meet for us.”

Blommers led a 1-2-4 NCMP finish in the 50 freestyle in 29.39, just ahead of Michener in 30.91. Rachel Boll was fourth in 31.36. Blommers later pulled away from the 100 breaststroke field to win in 1:17.93.

Jenkins, Jessica Zahn and Paulius dominated the 200 individual medley race. Jenkins touched first in 2:44.77 followed by Zahn in 2:51.32 and Paulius in 2:53.69. Brooks claimed the 100 butterfly victory in 1:19.46.

Boone’s Hall was able to hold off Natalie Boll to win the 400 freestyle by three seconds, 5:07.64 to 5:10.78. In the 100 backstroke, Boone’s Liz Purtle touched the wall ahead of NCMP’s Rachel Boll, 1:13.18 to 1:18.37.

The Aquagirl foursome of Blommers, Zahn, Jenkins and Inskeep won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:59.85. NCMP’s team of Michener, Hill, Brooks and Natalie Boll we’re third in 2:05.55.

In the final event of the night, all six relay teams battled for places. NCMP went 1-3-4. The Aquagirls’ team of Natalie Boll, Zahn, Jenkins and Inskeep caught and passed the Boone team of Lauren Kennedy, Hall, Ellie Madson and Purtle to win in 4:27.14 to Boone’s 4:33.41.

NCMP seniors Janna Balek, Miranda Ervin, Jaclyn Michener, Julia Prime, Briahna Teague, Sarah Urias, Kinzi Van Wyk and Jessica Zahn and their parents were honored during a break in the action on Tuesday.

The Aquagirl junior varsity won the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Race winners were Van Sickle in he 200 freestyle, Teague in the 200 individual medley, Hill in the 50 freestyle, Balek in the 100 butterfly, Urias in the 100 freestyle, and Neal in the 100 breaststroke.

NCMP prepares to defend its Little Hawkeye Conference championship on Tuesday at Indianola. Races begin at 4:30 p.m.

The Aquagirls compete in the North Central Iowa Conference meet at 1 p.m. on Oct. 21 at Grinnell College.
