MONTEZUMA — Sophomore Abbey McConeghey returned to the Colfax-Mingo lineup Thursday, and her presence nearly helped the Tigerhawk girls claim the team title.
McConeghey placed third overall, and that helped the Tigerhawks to a runner-up finish. Colfax-Mingo scored 46 points on the night, trailing only Collins-Maxwell.
The Tigerhawks had four runners in the top 18 positions. After McConeghey was freshman Crystal Lincoln in 13th, junior Ilia Hostetter in 15th and senior Danielle Decker in 18th. The final scoring runner was junior Delaney Underwood in 26th.
The Colfax-Mingo boys were led by junior Cauy Fitch in 12th. The Tigerhawks were fifth in the team standings.
Winning the girls race was Pella Christian’s Emma Kolb in 21 minutes, 29.82 seconds. North Mahaska’s Cheyenne Shaw was second in 21:58.49. McConeghey, who hadn’t run since the PCM Invitational on Sept. 21, crossed the finish line in 22:43.48.
Collins-Maxwell put all five of its scoring runners in the top 21 and won the title with 42 points. The only other two teams to score points were Montezuma (70) and South Tama County (75).
In the boys’ race, Fitch crossed the finish line in 20:29. His younger brother, sophomore Cyden Fitch, was 21st in 21:47.
English Valleys’ Jacob Glandon won the boys’ 5K in 19:15. Pella Christian’s Lucas Bandstra (19:20) and Brayton Juffer (19:21) were second and third, respectively.
