PCM holds own against talented field

NORWALK — The Prairie City-Monroe girls’ cross country team was the only Class 2A team in a strong field at the Norwalk Invitational.

The 15th-ranked Mustangs still were able to hold their own against two 3A ranked squads and 4A Newton on Monday at McAninch Sports Complex.

PCM, led by junior Kirstin Ives, placed fourth in the eight-team field. The Mustangs scored 118 points, trailing Newton by 14. Class 3A No. 5 Ballard won the team title with 35 points, and 3A No. 12 Pella (39) was closely behind in second.

The rest of the field included 3A Winterset (131), 3A Norwalk (146), 3A Bondurant-Farrar (174) and 3A Carlisle (187).

Ives was 10th with a time of 21 minutes, 35 seconds.

Senior Baylee Smith placed 18th in 22:42. Sophomore Klaire Jungling was 23rd in 23:14.7 and junior Megan Townley placed 26th in 23:23.5.

Class 3A No. 5 Megan Sievers of Carlisle won the race in 19:51 and 3A No. 17 Ellie Twedt of Ballard was second in 19:59.1.

The boys’ field included three 3A ranked teams — No. 7 Carlisle, No. 8 Cedar Rapids Xavier and No. 11 Bondurant-Farrar.

The Bluejays won the meet with 44 points, Carlisle was next with 50 and Cedar Rapids Xavier finished third with 55 points. PCM placed ninth in the nine-team field with 225 points.

Leading PCM were sophomore Jason Stafford in 26th with a time of 19:05.5. Freshman Beau Webb took 30th in 19:24.6.

Class 3A No. 23 Jonathan Lansing of Cedar Rapids Xavier won the race in 17:12.6. Class 3A No. 12 Drake VanBaale (17:20.5) of Bondurant-Farrar and 3A No. 8 Thomas Gauley (17:25.7) of Pella were second and third, respectively.
