Newton JV football team wins

Newton High’s junior varsity football team notched a 19-6 win at home over visiting Marshalltown on Monday.

The Cardinals got out to a 2-0 lead when the football was snapped over the Bobcat punter’s head for a safety on Marshalltown’s first possession of the game. The lead increased to 9-0 when Logan Cummins ran 26 yards for a touchdown and Will Cheng kicked the extra point.

In the second quarter, Kyle Long capped a Cardinal 50-yard drive with a 5-yard TD run. Josh Meyer booted the extra point for a 16-0 lead by halftime.

Following a scoreless third quarter, Meyer kicked a 40-yard field goal with six minutes remaining in the game to put Newton up 19-0. Marshalltown drove for its only score on the next possession.

Cummins led the Newton rushing attack with 83 yards on six carries. Long went 7-of-15 passing for 84 yards. Julian Hotchkin made four catches for 60 yards.

Newton turned the ball over seven times in the game — six fumbles and one interception. It was penalized 45 yards.

The Newton defense recorded five quarterback sacks led by Lucas Clayton with 3.5 sacks.
