Earles claims 1,500th assist in C-M’s win over English Valleys

NORTH ENGLISH — Colfax-Mingo got down early in its South Iowa Cedar League volleyball match against North English on Monday.

The Tigerhawks lost the first set and trailed big in two of the other three games, but a pair of seniors rallied the visitors to a big conference victory.

Senior Ries Wilson blasted a career-high 37 kills and had 25 digs and senior Megan Earles claimed her 1,500th assist in the Tigerhawks’ 22-25, 28-26, 25-17, 25-23 victory.

Colfax-Mingo (9-10 overall, 3-3 in the SICL) trailed 5-0 and 18-11 in game one before rallying to make it close. In game two, English Valleys jumped out to a 7-1 lead and eventually held a 17-8 lead before the Tigerhawks rallied to even the match.

The Tigerhawks led throughout the entire frame in set four to take a lead. They had to rally again in the fourth set, trailing 7-3, 19-10 and 22-16. Colfax-Mingo scored nine of the final 10 points to score the four-set win.

Colfax-Mingo had 56 kills total in the match. Wilson’s 37 were paired with a career-high eight kills from freshman Chelsey Temple, and junior Colbee Cunningham also had five kills.

Earles finished with 43 assists and 14 digs, but she also was 31-of-31 in serves with three aces.

The Tigerhawks were 95-of-99 in serves on the night.

Cunningham was 21-of-21 in serves with two aces and 10 digs. Junior Chelsea Russell tallied 19 digs and was 14-of-14 in serves and sophomore Shanen Shedenhelm finished with 11 digs. Junior Braedynn Rawlins was 11-of-12 in serves.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Colfax-Mingo.

The Tigerhawks are 3-5 in their last eight matches. They host Belle Plaine at 7 p.m. Thursday in Colfax.
