Cardinal boys’ 4A fall golf season ends at district

AMES — Newton High’s Cardinals wrapped up their Class 4A fall golf season with an 11th-place finish in a 4A district tournament on Tuesday hosted by Ames.

The Cardinals played the 18-hole district tournament on the par-72 Veenker Memorial Golf Course. There were four of the top-15 ranked 4A teams in the tournament with three advancing to the Class 4A state golf tournament on Friday and Saturday at Elmwood Country Club in Marshalltown.

Newton’s top four golfers on Tuesday combined for a team score of 414. Eleventh-ranked Ames edged sixth-ranked Waukee for the district championship, 308-309.

Indianola, ranked 14th, beat No 4 West Des Moines Valley for third place and the final team state slot, 314-317.

Leading Newton was led by junior Colin McAnally who carded a 97 on rounds of 43 and 54, finishing 46th. Seniors Nate Vanzee and Shaiden Simmons finished 56th and 56th, respectively, with a 103 (52-51) and a 105 (53-52). Sophomore Damon Reynolds was 62nd with rounds of 49 and 60 with a 109.

Sophomore Nate Keith finished 69th by shooting a 127 (70-57). Devon Young, a junior, ended up 73rd with a 138 (61-77).

The top 10 individuals out of the Ames district tournament advance into the state meet either as members of teams or because of ties. Ties are not broken in the district tournament.

Tuesday’s district medalist was 46th-ranked Ben Stewart of Ames, who shot a 1-under par 73. Ames teammate Connor Van Weelden, ranked seventh, was runner-up as he and No. 8-ranked Jake Marvelli of Indianola tied for second with 74s. Waukee’s Bennett Pederson was third with a 75.

Newton’s golfers get back in the swing of things in the spring of 2018 when they play Little Hawkeye Conference golf.
