Baxter faces deep field at D-NH

DIKE — Facing several ranked teams, the Baxter cross country teams competed at the annual Wolverine Invitational at Fox Ridge Golf Course on Tuesday.

Baxter’s Brenna Thomson finished eighth and trailed six other ranked runners in the girls’ 5K race. Thomson, ranked 17th in Class 1A, finished in 20 minutes, 1 second. That was four seconds behind 1A No. 11 Jenna Twait of Hudson.

The top finisher for the Baxter boys was Ian Thomson, who finished 17th in the boys’ 5K race. Ian Thomson, who came into the day ranked 30th in 1A, had several ranked runners in front of him as he finished in 17:24.

The 1A No. 13 Baxter girls, who were still without No. 2 runner Lauren Ratliff, finished 11th in the 18-team field with 298 points. Class 3A No. 5 Charles City won the meet with 73 points and 3A No. 10 Grinnell was next with 75.

The Baxter boys finished 14th in the 20-team field with 329 points. Class 3A No. 12 Grinnell won the meet with 47 points.

Ashlee Johnson was 30th overall for the Baxter girls, and Logan Berg finished 23rd in the boys’ race.
