Skiff is the home to the latest Spirit of Mercy Award winner, Matthew Michelson. Michelson is an Emergency Department nurse at Skiff, and he also works in the pediatric Emergency Department at Mercy — Des Moines.
The nomination form submitted by Michelson’s colleagues included the following: “Matt is one of the most compassionate people we know, inside and outside of work. He has a big heart and cares about all of his patients deeply. One night, we had a patient come in who was a young mother and needed surgery in Des Moines. The patient’s significant other had their child with him, so he could not ride in the ambulance. He stated he also did not have money for a cab or a babysitter. Matt took money out of his own wallet to give to this family to pay for the cab. Because of Matt, this family was able to stay together during a difficult time.”
The nomination form went on to say that Michelson “shines” in excellence, always giving to others, and always being willing to provide advice and insight.
According to Laura Wenman, Mercy’s Vice President of Mission Integration, Michelson was selected by one of the highest scores recorded thus far in the Spirit of Mercy Award process.
