Newton volleyball loses 5-set LHC match at Oskaloosa

OSKALOOSA — Powering the Newton High Cardinal net attack Tuesday, senior Alexis Hoffman pounded down 12 kills. She also put up four solo blocks and had one block assist for the Cardinals in their Little Hawkeye Conference match against host Oskaloosa.

Unfortunately, the five-set match did not go Newton’s way. The Indians pulled out a 25-22, 21-25, 25-10, 20-25, 15-10 win to snap their four-match losing streak. The Cardinals dropped their 10th match in a row.

Newton (2-11) fell to 0-4 in LHC play while Oskaloosa (5-11) claimed its first conference win, 1-3. The Cardinals host Class 2A No. 12 Pella Christian at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday at Newton High School in conference action.

Hoffman was also credited with six digs in the match. Senior libero Carter Lee had 16 digs followed by seniors Rachel Berkland and Harlie Durr with 10 digs and nine digs, respectively. Senior Audrey Lucas had six digs.

Senior Lucy Lilienthal and Berkland each had seven kills at the net. Lucas and senior Madison Bleeker had two kills apiece. Bleeker and Lilienthal put up one solo block apiece.

Freshman setter Kate Callaghan had 28 set assists. She also had four kills and one block assist at the net. Callaghan served up five aces. Lucas had one ace serve.

Newton’s freshmen lost to Oskaloosa 25-22, 10-25, 15-10. As a team, they served 55-of-58 with 11 aces, and had 17 kills at the net. Tess Brunsmann went 11-of-11 serving with two ace serves, and had three kills, eight set assists and two digs.

Jamie Rogers had five kills and three ace serves while Riley Davidson had two ace serves, two set assists and two kills. Jerrica McGuire had three kills and one ace serve. Kayli Greer had two kills and one ace serve.

Nykole Hernandez made five digs and had one kill. Haley Fuller had two ace serves and one kill. Lainey Hull had two digs and Trenity Conley went 1-of-1 serving.

The freshman and junior varsity matches start at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at home against Pella Christian.
