Cardinal varsity plays in Des Moines Christian tourney

URBANDALE — Newton High’s varsity volleyball team went 0-4 in action at Thursday’s Des Moines Christian tournament.

The Cardinals lost 21-17, 21-12 to Van Meter, which won the tournament at 4-0. Kate Callaghan had seven set assists for Newton.

Rachel Berkland downed four kills and Alexis Hoffman made two kills. Lucy Lilienthal, Allie Norvell and Madi Amos had one kill apiece. Lilienthal had one solo block.

Callaghan and Amos each had two service aces. Berkland served one ace.

Carter Lee came up with seven digs and Amos made five digs, Callaghan had four digs, and Hoffman had two digs. Norvell and Addy Blom had one dig.

Mount Ayr got past Newton 21-13, 19-21, 15-10. Hoffman led the net attack for the Cardinals with seven kills. Berkland had five kills, Madison Bleeker had three kills, Blom and Callaghan each had one kill.

Bleeker and Callaghan each had one solo block. Callaghan was credited with 13 set assists. Amos had one set assist.

Harlie Durr made nine digs, Blom had five digs and Lee had four digs. Berkland and Callaghan each had three digs, and Amos had one dig. Durr and Hoffman had one service ace apiece.

Newton played fellow Little Hawkeye Conference member Grinnell, losing in three sets. The Tigers won 20-22, 21-15, 17-15. Newton was down 20-8 in the first set when Callaghan served 14 straight points to lead the Cardinals to the set win.

Callaghan had two service aces as did Hoffman against Grinnell. Durr had one ace serve. Callaghan had 13 set assists and two block assists. Hoffman made one solo block and two assisted blocks.

Hoffman and Berkland each downed five kills, and Callaghan had four kills. Durr and Bleeker each had one kill and one blocks assist. Berkland was credited with two set assists.

Durr and Berkland each had seven digs, Hoffman had five digs. Amos made four digs.

Des Moines Christian beat Newton 21-14, 21-11. Berkland had four kills followed by Hoffman and Bleeker with three kills apiece. Credited with one kill each were Norvell, Callaghan, Lee and Durr.

Callaghan had nine set assists and the lone ace serve of the match. Durr put up five digs. Berkland and Lee each had three digs.

Newton is 2-10 overall. The Cardinals take an 0-3 Little Hawkeye Conference mark into Tuesday’s 7:15 p.m. conference match at Oskaloosa.
