Baxter wins one, loses two at Madrid quad

MADRID — The Baxter volleyball team went 1-2 in a Madrid quadrangular on Monday night.

The Bolts defeated Glidden-Ralston in straight sets but were swept by Collins-Maxwell and dropped a three-set match to host Madrid.

Baxter claimed a 25-11, 25-13 win over Glidden-Ralston. The Bolts (4-4) lost 25-11, 25-23 to Collins-Maxwell and the Tigers defeated Baxter 18-25, 25-21, 15-9.

“It was a tough night for us,” Baxter coach Scott Ranck said. “We had some flashes of awesomeness, but overall, we came out flat and just didn’t cick consistently as a team.”

Unofficially, in the win over Glidden-Ralston, sophomore Amber Weltha finished with six kills, and senior Jordynn Wesselink chipped in five kills. Junior Sydney Schmidt tallied nine assists and senior Sailor Hinegardner collected six digs.

Wesselink had 11 kills in the loss against Collins-Maxwell. No other Bolt player had more than one. Collins-Maxwell’s Brianda Bane had 13 kills in the win.

Schmidt finished with 10 assists, Hinegardner had six digs and Wesselink chipped in three digs.

Weltha and Wesselink both had six kills against Madrid. Senior Lexi Ewing totaled nine assists and Schmidt finished with seven.
Hinegardner tallied five digs, Wesselink had four digs and Weltha finished with two blocks.

“The good news for us is the goals that we want to accomplish as a team this year are still ahead of us,” Ranck said. “We are going to head back to practice, put forth good effort to clean up some things and work on being more consistent so we can achieve those goals.”

Baxter returns to Iowa Star Conference play against Valley Lutheran at 7 p.m. Thursday in Cedar Falls.
