Hawks dominate in district opener

SULLY — Lynnville-Sully’s eighth-ranked Hawks entered Class A District 6 play with the throttle open wide. The Hawks posted a resounding 54-14 win over visiting North Mahaska Friday night.

The Hawks were up 40-6 over the Warhawks at halftime. They amassed 253 yards on the ground and had 103 yards passing the ball. They held the Warhawks to 91 yards of rushing and 43 yards passing.

Elijah Collins went 3-of-9 passing and all three completions were for touchdowns. He started out by hooking up with Tanner Foster on a 25-yard scoring strike with 9:55 left in the first quarter.

Four minutes later, Gage Vander Leest broke loose on a 34-yard touchdown run. Lynnville-Sully was up 12-0. Vander Leest completed a pass to Drake Ehresman, which resulted in a 40-yard touchdown play with 2:02 left. Brevin Hansen added the extra point for a 19-0 advantage.

North Mahaska got on the scoreboard at the 8:06 mark of the second period. Seth Edmundson, who had 57 yards on 11 carries for the Warhawks, scored on a 24-yard run.

Hansen answered for Lynnville-Sully on the ensuing kickoff, returning it 81 yards for the touchdown. Sage Zylstra tacked on a two-point run. Hansen caught TD pass from Collins for seven yards and 31 yards in the final six minutes of the first half and kicked another extra point.

Nate Stock capped a Hawk drive with 8:21 remaining in the third quarter with a 33-yard TD run. Zylstra finished the Hawk scoring on a 2-yard TD run with 37 seconds left in the period. Hansen kicked the two extra points.

The Warhawks put together a scoring drive in the fourth quarter. Luke Groves reached the end zone from eight yards out. Tyler Strasser caught the 2-point conversion pass from Ben Sherburne.

Stock had 67 yards on six carries and Evan Squires rushed for 49 yards on 10 carries. Zylstra had 58 yards on seven carries.

Lynnville-Sully’s defense was led by Squires with eight tackles while Grant Wehrle and Kemper Lukehart had seven tackles apiece. Lukehart had a quarterback sack. Ehresman and Hansen each recovered a Warhawk fumble.

Rylan James punted twice for a 34.5-yard average for the Hawks.

The Hawks are 3-0 for the season and 1-0 in district play. They play at 7 p.m. on Friday at Cardinal in a district contest.
