Colfax 19-year-old killed in single-vehicle accident Saturday

COLFAX – A 19-year-old from Colfax was killed in a single-vehicle accident north of town Saturday evening, according to Jasper County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said Ty Carlson was driving his pick-up truck southbound on a rural county gravel road at the 600 block of Forest Street South at around 8:37 p.m. Saturday when the incident occured. JCSO said his truck entered a ditch and struck a power pole.

"He headed to a curb, lost control and entered the ditch," PCSO Chief Deputy Duane Rozendaal. "The vehicle rolled on its left side, striking a utiliity pole."

Carlson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials said Carlson was the sole passenger of the vehicle. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of incident, according to JCSO.

No other injuries were reported in connection to the accident.

Colfax Fire Department/EMS and Newton EMS assisted in the incident and JCSO deputies are investigating the cause of the crash. It is currently unknown if speed or intoxication were factors.

According to his Facebook page, Carlson was a student at Colfax-Mingo High School, serving as a member of the wrestling and football teams. He graduated in 2016, and attended Iowa Central Community College.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of our former teammate and athlete, Ty Carlson. What a great example of a young man," the Colfax-Mingo wrestling program said in a Facebook post. "From football to wrestling, to his passion of bull riding, he worked hard at everything he did. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, and to all that had the privilege of knowing him. We will miss you, Ty."

Carlson also had a passion for bull riding. The day of the collision, the 19-year-old won the bull riding competition at the Maxwell Old Settlers Rodeo.

"Always sad when a life is lost, but it is especially hard when such a talented cowboy leaves us early," the Maxwell Rodeo Committee said in a Facebook post. "God Speed Carlson Family."

A memorial bull riding will be held in Carlson's honor Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Jasper County Fairgrounds. Admission costs $10 for adults and $5 for children 15 to 6 years old. Kids 5 and under are free.
