James Winston Bogart, Jr., 70, of Newton, died on Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2017, at Fountain West Healthcare Center in West Des Moines. A visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Aug. 9 at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory followed by burial at Newton Union Cemetery. Memorials to the family of James Bogart may be left at the funeral home.

James, the son of James Winston and Mary Ellen (Scholfield) Bogart, Sr., was born April 21, 1947 in Illinois. He grew up in eastern Iowa and graduated from high school in the Quad Cities. He also received his degree in physics with a minor in French from Iowa State University.

On Dec. 19, 1970, James was united in marriage with Carol Manning in Newton. James worked for the Maytag Company for 30 years, first as an inspector in the factory and later as a graphic designer, where one of his duties was creating the comic strips for the employee newsletter. After retiring, he continued to work for Maytag as a contract employee. James was a talented artist and enjoyed drawing and painting. He also had authored six science fiction books.

James is survived by his sons, Jesse (Kathy) Bogart of Texas and Andy (Allicia Spoon-Bogart) Bogart of Des Moines; and three grandchildren, Curtis, Alex and Cheyenne. He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Carol Bogart in 2011.
