Lake Red Rock Programs for July 7-8

Upcoming activities planned July 7-9 at Lake Red Rock include:

Friday beginning at 9 p.m. Nature’s Fireworks: Fireflies at Wallashuck Campground

Ooh. Aah. The brilliant flashes of fireflies brighten the warm summer nights and offer a wonderful display. Take a walk in search of “nature’s “fireworks” and learn a bit about the insects that create the show.

Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. Let’s Go Paddling at North Overlook Beach

Enjoy the chance to experience both canoeing and kayaking in the same day. Give one or both types of watercraft a try and see how much fun paddling can be. You must be at least 10 years old to use kayaks. Life jackets will be provided. Programs may be canceled if inclement weather and wind conditions.

Saturday 8 at 1 p.m. Archaeology at
Iowaville: Ioway Tribe at the Visitor Center

In 2010, archeological excavations occurred at a large village site and home of the famous Ioway leader, Mahaska (White Cloud). The village lies along the bank of the Des Moines River, a rich environment where tribal members harvested a wide variety of natural resources, including coal, clay, bear, elk, swan, hazelnuts, and plums, to name only a few items found at the site. With a peak population of about 1,000, the village would have housed more people than St. Louis in 1800. Today, archaeological work reveals significant traces of the site remain at a spot now used as a farm field. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers archaeologist Cindy Peterson will provide a brief history of the site and discuss archaeological finds there.

Saturday at 2 p.m. Meet Bobber the Water Safety Dog at North Overlook Beach

Bobber is a fun loving pup that likes to meet new people and help them learn how to be safe around the water. Come meet him and pick up some great safety tips.

Saturday at 3 p.m. Call of the Wild at the Playscape

Do you have to yell to get your voice to be heard at home? Imagine how hard it is for animals to communicate across a forest, prairie or lake. Using primitive musical instruments, try your luck sharing messages” with other participants and see how far your “calls” carry over the Playscape.

Programs are free of charge. Outdoor activities may be canceled if raining. For more information, contact Lake Red Rock at 641-828-7522 or email lakeredrock@usace.army.mil.
