Darrell Wertz, 88, of Kellogg, died Friday, June 16, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 21 at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 20 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Kellogg Fire and Ambulance, Kellogg Historical Museum or the Kellogg Christian Church.

Darrell, the son of Leslie and Muriel (Sparks) Wertz, was born Oct. 11, 1928, in rural Kellogg. He grew up and graduated form Kellogg High School in 1948. On Aug. 23, 1952, Darrell was united in marriage with Nellie Quick at the Methodist Church in Knoxville. Darrell was a life long farmer. He and Nellie farmed in the Prairie City area from 1959-1973, before moving back to rural Kellogg. Darrell enjoyed his farming and livestock but most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also like to read history books and watch old westerns.

Those left to honor Darrell’s memory are his wife, Nellie of Kellogg; children, Doug (Jackie) Wertz of Riverton, Julie (Greg) Stokke of Ankeny and Steve (Kellie) Wertz of Kellogg; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his sister, June Buckley of Des Moines; and a sister-in-law, Bev Wertz of Newton. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Deborah (Keith) Osborn; grandson, Travis Tysor; brother, Wayne Wertz; a sister, Marlene Wertz in infancy; and a brother-in-law, Arnold Buckley.
