CMB softball cruises past Greene County

JEFFERSON — Collins-Maxwell/Baxter senior Abbey Kahler needed just 55 pitches to finish a complete-game win over Greene County during Heart of Iowa Conference action on Wednesday.

Kahler surrendered two hits and struck out seven and the offense did the rest during a 10-0, five-inning triumph.

The Raiders scored four in the first, two in the second and ended the game early with a four-run fourth.

Class 2A No. 7 CMB has now won nine straight HOIC games and improved its league record to 11-1. The Raiders are 16-4 after winning 13 of their last 15 games.

Freshman Mikayla Houge improved her team-best batting average with three hits, including two doubles, and drove in three runs and scored twice.

Junior Katie Camp had two hits and scored two runs and junior Jordynn Wesselink recorded a two-run single in the seventh. Freshman Abby Husak finished with two hits in her fourth start of the season as she replaced senior Heather Jessen in the lineup.

Jessen and senior Veronica Condon will miss games through at least Wednesday due to a school trip to Italy.

CMB hosts Van Meter for a nonconference game at 7 p.m. Thursday in Collins.

The Raiders scored enough runs to be in position to win, but a six-error night plagued the CMB baseball team during a 16-9 conference loss to Greene County.

The Raiders (2-10, 2-8) led 2-0 after one inning, but the Rams (5-8, 4-6) plated seven runs in the second inning and never trailed again.

Both teams came into the game with losing streaks of three games.

Greene County scored twice in the fourth to go up 9-2. CMB got within 9-8 with a six-run top of the fifth inning, but the Rams countered with three in the fifth and four in the sixth.

The Raiders had seven hits in the game and walked nine times. Senior Creighton Caple led the way with a pair of hits, a pair of runs and a stolen base.

Senior Tucker Maxwell had one hit, two walks, two RBIs and a run scored, junior Travis Lindemoen had one hit, one run and two walks and senior Brady Kemp was 1-for-3 with two runs and a walk.

Freshman Cole Damman also had one hit, scored a run, walked three times and had an RBI and sophomore Derrick Klemme had one hit, one walk and one RBI.

Lindemoen (2-2) took the loss on the mound, allowing seven earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. Maxwell and freshman Carter Nelsen also pitched in relief. The Raider pitchers allowed 13 hits and surrendered four walks.

Chase Stoline led the Rams with three hits, three runs and two RBIs, and Trey Tucker added two hits, two runs and four RBIs.

Bryce Hoyle (1-0) earned the win on the mound.

CMB hosts Roland-Story at 5:15 p.m. Friday in Collins.
