Newton High’s softball team got on the scoreboard against visiting Class 5A ninth-ranked Indianola on Wednesday night. The Cardinals couldn’t catch the Indians, losing 4-1 in Little Hawkeye Conference play.
The loss dropped the Cardinals to 6-4 in conference action and 11-8 overall. They play a LHC doubleheader at 6 p.m. Thursday at Dallas Center-Grimes.
Indianola (18-3, 8-3) took a 2-0 lead on a two-run home run by Emma Yeager in the second inning. It came with two gone in the frame.
The Indians scored a run in the third so did the Cardinals. With two gone, Audrey Lucas singled and scored on a double by Kennedy Leiker.
Indianola added a run in the sixth.
Lucas had two singles in the game. The other hit was a single by Karley Leiker.
Peyton Maher was the losing pitcher for Newton. She allowed eight hits, walked two, hit one batter and struck out three.
