Colfax-Mingo knocks off 4A No. 8 SBL at ADM

ADEL — Playing against three ranked teams in Class 4A and 2A Van Meter, the Class 1A No. 11 Colfax-Mingo softball team went 2-2 at the ADM tournament on Friday and Saturday.

The Tigerhawks opened the tournament Friday with a 4-1 win over 4A No. 8 Sergeant Bluff-Luton and finished play with a 5-2 victory over Van Meter on Saturday. In between, Colfax-Mingo lost to 4A No. 11 ADM, 7-5, and to 4A No. 4 Ballard, 13-2.

Against SBL (14-5) on Friday, senior Amy Russell earned the win in the circle with five strikeouts. Russell (8-2) allowed one run on five hits and walked one.

At the plate, junior Rhiannon Haley had two hits and two RBIs to lead the offense. Junior Ries Wilson had one hit and one RBI, senior Alivia Haley had one hit and scored one run and Russell doubled, walked once and had an RBI.

The Tigerhawks (10-7) completed their day Friday with a two-run loss to the host Tigers (9-8).

ADM led 3-2 after one inning and then went up 7-4 after three.

Colfax-Mingo got within two with a run in the fifth but couldn’t get any closer.

Wilson, Russell and Rhiannon Haley had two hits apiece for the Tigerhawks. Alivia Haley scored two runs and sophomore Mackensie Brown drove in two runs.

Sophomore Colbee Cunningham (2-5) allowed seven runs on nine hits with six walks in six innings.

Ballard (17-3) plated three runs in the first, four in the second and three in the third to jump out to a big lead early and never looked back.

The Tigerhawks had just five hits at the plate, led by Alivia Haley’s two hits.

Russell and Rhiannon Haley both RBIs and Russell and Alivia Haley scored a run apiece.

Cunningham took the loss after allowing 13 runs — three earned — on seven hits with five walks in five innings.

Against Van Meter, Russell earned the win in the circle with two runs — no earned — on two hits with six strikeouts and four walks in six innings.

The Tigerhawks had five hits. Alivia Haley homered, Wilson had two RBIs, Brown walked twice and scored a run and Rhiannon Haley had one hit, one run and one RBI. Eighth-grader Madison Gillikson had one hit, one walk and scored one run.

Colfax-Mingo plays English Valleys at 6 p.m. Monday in North English.
