• James A. Garland Jr., 37, of Newton, was charged with domestic assault at 8:20 p.m. Saturday after police were called to the 500 block of South Second Avenue West. The victim told officers she had been assaulted by Garland Jr. when she arrived to pick up her child. The victim alleged Garland Jr. grabbed her uniform and yanked her down to the ground and made the collar of the shirt tight around her neck. Garland Jr. told police the victim initiated the fight. The victim had a cut beneath the right side of her mouth, which she stated was from Garland Jr. assaulting her the previous night. Garland was arrested on domestic battery with bodily harm multiple times in Illinois. Garland was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Amy M. Simmons, 34, of Newton, was charged with domestic abuse assault injury or mental illness at 12:30 a.m. Sunday at the Manhattan bar. A police officer was called to the front lobby of the Newton Police Department later that day in reference to a domestic assault. The victim told police she was at the Manhattan bar when Simmons allegedly threw an entire pitcher of beer on her, hitting the victim in the jaw below the lower lips on the right side. The injury left a bruise. The victim requested a no-contact order against Simmons. Simmons was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Vivian D. Doelue, 30, of Newton, was charged with domestic abuse assault — injury or mental illness at 8:52 p.m. Sunday after police were called to Eighth Street North in reference to an assault. It was reported by a male that a woman was attacking him and he was bleeding. When police arrived, the victim said he and Doelue had been fighting over a cell phone and issues of infidelity. Doelue allegedly hit the victim in the face causing his nose to bleed. Doelue denied hitting the victim, stating, “his nose just bleeds sometimes.” Doelue was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Melissa K. Stephen, 39, of Newton, was charged with forgery at 12:45 a.m. May 1 at Newton 66 after she allegedly wrote a check for $1,26.71 and forged a signature from another checking account without permission. The account had been closed for six years. Stephen was arrested on a warrant May 24 and taken to the Jasper County Jail.
